With the advent of James Gunn‘s era of the DC universe, we thought the franchise might finally be on surer footing, but thanks to HBO’s cancel-happy mentality, we’re back to fearing for its future. Meanwhile, we assumed we had a couple more weeks until those inevitable parallels between Pedro Pascal‘s two iconic roles started happening, but no such luck. Last but not least, Marvel fans have a lot to say about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 taking some unexpected inspiration.

Savage HBO cancellations could even affect James Gunn’s DCU, chief declares

While it sounds like Gunn and producing partner Peter Safran have more of Warner Bros.’ support than previous DCEU regimes, HBO boss Casey Bloys has nevertheless declared that none of the duo’s upcoming DCU streaming projects — including a Creature Commandos animated series and Wonder Woman prequel Paradise Lost — are guaranteed to survive, as he ominously warned that “other options” will be explored if these shows fail to hit in the way the studio is after. So maybe don’t bank on Viola Davis’ Waller series lasting for years on end.

The Mandalorian hasn’t even started yet, but the inevitable Mando/Joel comparisons have already started

Via HBO

Given that both The Last of Us‘ Joel and the titular bounty hunter from The Mandalorian are grizzled survivors protecting young kids, there’s a basic comparison to be drawn between these two Pedro Pascal roles of the moment, but though we’re still a couple of weeks away from the Star Wars show’s return, fans are already sick and tired of hearing about this surface-level parallel between the two very different characters. An attempt to draw a similarity between Joel and Din Djarin was swiftly shot down in flames by already jaded folks hoping to never hear this comparison again. Sorry, guys, it’s gonna happen a lot.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 looks to sport anime-style action, and the fans have a lot of opinions

To loop back around to James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is apparently going to freshen things up by taking inspiration from anime for its action set pieces. According to the latest scoop, an evolved form for Groot could give things a Dragon Ball Z flavor while Gamora will allegedly take after Alita: Battle Angel. As you’d expect, this claim is exciting those that share a love of the MCU and anime, although others are more skeptical if this is really going to come to pass. If it does, though, it leaves the door open for Gunn to mine anime again in the DCU.

Just as the Warrior Nun fandom keeps on fighting, another round of the latest sci-fi news will be battling its way back to you tomorrow.
