‘Lisa Frankenstein’ Trailer Gives Monster Movie a Dark Comedy Twist

Zelda Williams directs Diablo Cody’s script about a high school goth girl (Kathryn Newton) in love with a reanimated creature (Cole Sprouse)

The story of Frankenstein’s monster serves as inspiration for an Eighties-set teen comedy/slasher film in the new trailer for Lisa Frankenstein.

Written by Juno scribe Diablo Cody and directed by Zelda Williams (Robin Williams’ daughter, making her feature-length directorial debut), the “coming-of-rage” story focuses on the necrophilic infatuation Kathryn Newton’s goth high schooler has for a reanimated corpse played by Cole Sprouse, with the pair rebuilding the creature’s body one slaying at a time.

“After going through a playfully horrific transformation, the romantic duo embark on a murderous journey to find true love, happiness, and a few missing body parts along the way,” Focus Features said in its synopsis.

Lisa Frankenstein also stars Carla Gugino, Joe Chrest, Liza Soberano, and more. The dark comedy/love story — which hits theaters on February 9, just in time for Valentine’s Day — was also among Rolling Stone‘s 50 Most Anticipated Movies of 2024.

“True love may mean never having to say you’re sorry, but it unfortunately does mean you have to occasionally murder folks to keep your reanimated soul mate alive and intact,” Rolling Stone wrote. Screenwriter Diablo Cody (Juno, Young Adult, Jennifer’s Body) penned the script, so there may be some snark involved.
