With Madame Web, Sony expanded their Spider-Man universe. The film stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra/Cassie Webb, Sydney Sweeney as Julia Carpenter, Isabela Merced as Anya Corazon, Celeste O’Connor as Mattie Franklin, Adam Scott as Ben Parker, Tahar Rahim as Ezekiel and others. S. J. Clarkson has directed the superhero film. The article contains spoilers from the movie.

In Madame Web, it is shown that Cassie possesses unique powers because the spider was used to save her during her birth. Ezekiel keeps getting a vision that Julia, Anya and Mattie will kill him. In his vision of the future, the three girls wear Spider-women costumes and possess power. However, till the end of the film, none of the girls have any superpowers. They aren’t even aware of why Ezekiel was trying to kill them.

In an interview with Comicbook, director S. J. Clarkson revealed why she didn’t introduce Spider-Women in the film and why the girls weren’t granted their powers. Clarkson said, “Well, I thought it would be a bit greedy to do four origin stories. That’s not really fair, is it? I’ve got to share it. But I hope the exciting thing about it is, this is a tease. I think the origin story of the girls, we’re given, hopefully, a hint of the spirit of who they are. We’ve tried to stick to the spirit from the comic books, and draw from that and find out who they are and get a little bit of their sass and a little bit of their character coming through.”

The director added that it was a lot to tell everything in Madame Web. If they tried to cram it into one movie, it wouldn’t do justice to their individual stories.

Meanwhile, the Dakota Johnson starrer has received mainly negative reviews from critics. The current Rotten Tomatoes score for the film is 13%, and the audience score is 54%. In the end, the film did tease us that there’s more to the story. But as Cassie said, the future is yet to happen.
