It may come as a surprise to many people, but it has been reported that the Mahindra Scorpio-N has received a shocking safety rating of zero stars in the Australasian NCAP. According to reports, the recent crash test conducted by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) rewarded the Mahindra Scorpio-N zero stars because of the absence of the Advanced Driver Aids System (ADAS) in the tested model.

Scorpio-N scores 0-stars in ANCAP

For those who may not be aware, ANCAP has a strict policy of awarding zero stars to vehicles lacking ADAS, regardless of other safety features or structural integrity. According to the ANCAP test report, the Scorpio-N, despite scoring 0 stars, offered a stable passenger compartment in the frontal offset (MPDB) test. The protection for the driver’s chest and lower legs was deemed adequate, and all other critical body regions for both the driver and front passenger received good protection.

It has also been reported that in specific crash scenarios, such as the full-width frontal test, concerns were raised about the weak protection of the driver’s chest. The report highlighted that the Scorpio-N exhibited good protection for other critical body areas in this test. Apart from these, there were some issues, including the driver seat belt unlatching during the side impact test, which posed a threat of an increased risk of potential injury. As for the child occupant protection test, it showed mixed results. The Scorpio-N scored satisfactory scores in dynamic and side dynamic tests.

How can the ANCAP scores be improved?

As mentioned above, the primary reason behind the 0-star safety rating of the Mahindra Scorpio-N is that it does not offer ADAS. So once Mahindra adds this important driver assistance feature to its SUV, it will pass the ANCAP. Most likely, it will then score much higher when retested by the Australasian NCAP.

Back in December of last year, it was reported that the Mahindra Scorpio-N passed the Global NCAP crash tests with a perfect 5-star safety rating. The Scorpio-N scored 29.25 out of 34 in adult occupant protection, while it received 28.94 out of 48 in child occupant protection. The Mahindra Scorpio-N also performed very well for side impact, which is done under the new test protocol.

Global N-CAP at the time concluded that the Mahindra Scorpio-N offered good protection to the driver’s and passenger’s necks. However, the protection for the driver’s and passengers’ chests was marginal. In the side impact test with a deformable barrier, the Scorpio-N came out with flying colors and scored 16 out of a total of 17 points. For child safety, Mahindra Scorpio-N scored 28.93 points out of 49 in the child occupant protection test.

Following its extensive crash tests, the Global NCAP, in its report, stated that the bodyshell of the Mahindra Scorpio-N is very stable. Global NCAP, in addition to a single front crash test at a speed of 64 km/h, has now increased the number of parameters for its crash tests. Under the new regulations, the authorities now also note side crash impacts and have made the rules more stringent with the front test. Global NCAP has also become stricter in calculating the chest load readings on the crash test dummies.
