0 32

Even the most capable off-roading vehicles can get stuck and here is a proof of the same. This Land Rover Defender 5-door got royally stuck on a beach. Then came the Mahindra Thar for a rescue mission. Here is what happened.

It seems like that the owner of the Land Rover Defender was trying to get over an obstacle when the tyres of the Defender lost traction and the underbody got beached on the sand. The group of men in the Defender were trying on their own to get the Defender going. However, the rear wheels of the Defender kept on digging sand and get in a difficult situation.

Since the SUV was at an angle, it put most of the weight on the rear wheels, which kept on digging. Also, the tyres seem to be the stock ones, which do not do very well in such low-traction areas.

They finally decide to tow the Defender with another vehicle. A new-generation Mahindra Thar came to the rescue. Instead of towing the Defender from the front and overcome the obstacle, they decided to pull the SUV in reverse.

After setting up the tow hook, the Thar and the Defender start putting the power through the wheels to get unstuck. All the four wheels of the Thar initially did not find any traction and kept on moving freely. However, once the Mahindra Thar got some traction, it pulled out the Defender from the stuck position.

Is Thar more capable?

This rescue doesn’t mean that the Thar is now more capable than the Defender. Off-roading can be tricky, and vehicles can get unexpectedly stuck. While it depends on the vehicle and the driver, venturing off-road into unknown places can present unforeseen challenges. Off-roading can be extremely enjoyable, but there are a few things to keep in mind when tackling off-road trails.

One should never attempt hardcore off-roading without a backup vehicle. Regardless of the driver’s experience or the vehicle’s capabilities, any vehicle can get stuck. Having a recovery vehicle ensures a hassle-free rescue. It’s also important to carry off-road recovery equipment such as towing ropes, a tyre inflator, a hand digger, and sand ladders. Getting stuck in a secluded location can be extremely dangerous. It’s always a good idea to carry a pack of water bottles and dry food in case you’re stuck for long hours and help is hours away.

The Land Rover Defender is a highly popular SUV in India and has made a comeback after several decades. Indian and foreign owners have engaged in extreme off-roading adventures with this vehicle. After the initial sales, the British luxury car manufacturer added new engine options earlier this year. The Land Rover Defender 110 offers five doors and the option for 5+2 seating.

The Land Rover Defender has impressive off-road capabilities. It has a substantial ground clearance of 291mm, a 38-degree approach angle, and a 40-degree departure angle. The SUV can traverse through water depths of up to 900mm, which is quite extreme. It also has a roof load capacity of 300 kg and a massive towing capacity of 3,500 kg. Despite its off-road prowess, the cabin maintains a premium feel, with a 10-inch touchscreen in the center and the latest Pivi Pro infotainment system from Land Rover.

Coming to the off-roading capabilities of the all-new Thar, the new model is much more capable than its predecessor, thanks to its all-new chassis and platform. Mahindra has also worked on improving the vehicle’s approach and departure angles by tweaking the front and rear overhang. In the Mahindra Thar, the approach angle is now 42 degrees, the departure angle is 37 degrees, and the breakover angle is 27 degrees. It offers a ground clearance of 226mm, depending on the variant. Mahindra claims an impressive water wading capacity of 625mm, and with the addition of an aftermarket snorkel, it can be even greater.
