Many parts of North India received rainfall in the last couple of weeks. Many parts of Punjab even reported a hailstorm, which affected the crops. Here we have an incident from Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow where a car was stuck on a road after it caved in, creating a sinkhole. The video of the car stuck in the sinkhole has already gone viral on the internet.

The video has been shared by Cars India, a forum on Reddit. The video doesn’t share much information about this incident. After referring to other online reports, it was concluded that the incident took place in Lucknow’s Vikas Nagar, a residential area, after the rains.

Lucknow experienced unseasonal rains for 2 days continuously, which probably led to the creation of this sinkhole on the road. The sinkhole has affected the people living in the region, as it seems to be a main road that residents use to access the city.

The car seen dangling in the sinkhole looks like a Mahindra KUV100 NXT micro SUV. Both the rear wheels of the car are inside the sinkhole, and the SUV is completely stuck in it. The KUV100 is not coming out on its own as it is a front-wheel-drive vehicle. It is not clear if the sinkhole appeared out of nowhere or if the KUV100 driver drove the car over the caved portion, which triggered the mud to collapse and create a sinkhole.

As soon as the vehicle got stuck, the driver got out of the vehicle. After reaching a safe spot, he called the concerned authorities and informed them about the incident. PWD and local police officers also reached the spot to inspect the sinkhole. PWD immediately directed the officers to begin rebuilding or reconstructing the affected road.

The car driver was extremely lucky to have escaped without any injuries. If the car had fallen into the sinkhole, the chances of him getting injured were pretty high. A boy who is a local resident informed the media that he heard a loud sound while he was studying, and when he came out, he saw a large sinkhole.

He said, “It happened very suddenly. I saw the road had caved in, and the car was partially dangling. First, a tractor-trolley tried to pull the car out, but failed. Finally, a tow truck pulled the vehicle out. The sinkhole also kept increasing in size.”

This is not the first time a case like this has been reported in India. Every year during the monsoon, we come across similar cases from different parts of the country. Sinkholes form when the base of a structure, in this case, the road, weakens over a period of time. In most cases, it happens due to rain.

The flowing water erodes the loose mud and makes the base weak. This creates pockets under the soil, and the top of the road eventually collapses and creates a crater. In most cases, contractors who build such roads do not create the base using RCC in order to increase profit margins.
