Mahindra Thar prices hiked by a whopping Rs. 1.05 lakh
Since its launch in August 2020, the Mahindra Thar has been a huge success, with the introduction of a new rear-wheel drive version in January 2023 only adding to its popularity. Due to this immense demand, Mahindra has consistently increased its prices. Recently, the entire Thar lineup saw a price hike, with the reason cited being the BS6 Stage-II upgrade.
The most popular variant of the Mahindra Thar, the LX diesel-manual hard-top rear-wheel drive, has seen the biggest price hike of Rs 1.05 lakh, while the prices of the base-spec AX (O) diesel-manual hard-top rear-wheel drive have gone up by Rs 55,000. The rest of the Thar lineup, including all the four-wheel drive variants and the petrol-automatic version of hard-top rear-wheel drive, has seen a price hike of Rs 28,200. The four-wheel drive version of the Thar is now priced between Rs 13.49 lakh to Rs 16.77 lakh (all prices ex-showroom, India).

With the entry-level variant of the Mahindra Thar now more expensive by Rs 55,000, the starting price of the Thar’s range is much higher than before. However, Mahindra is reportedly working on a new base-spec variant to be positioned below the current AX (O) variant to bring the entry pricing of the Thar even lower. It is unclear what features will be offered in this new base variant, considering that the current base-spec AX (O) is already lacking in features.
Thar available in two drive layouts
The Mahindra Thar is available in India in two versions – rear-wheel drive and front-wheel drive. The rear-wheel drive version comes with two powertrain options – a 2.0-litre turbocharged 150 PS petrol engine with a 6-speed automatic gearbox and a 1.5-litre 115 PS diesel engine with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The four-wheel drive version is offered with two engine options – a 2.0-litre 150 PS turbocharged petrol engine and a 2.2-litre 130 PS diesel engine. Both these powertrain options are available with 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmissions.
Mahindra is also reportedly working on a five-door version of the Thar, which has already been spied several times during trial runs on open roads. It is expected that the five-door version of the Mahindra Thar might get a new name and more features.
Maruti Suzuki Jimny to launch soon
The Maruti Suzuki Jimny for the Indian market will come exclusively as a 5-door variant, making it the first market to receive this version. All variants will offer basic safety features, including dual airbags as standard.
Market as an off-road vehicle, the new Jimny has received an overwhelming response with bookings close to 25,000. The official launch of the Maruti Suzuki Jimny is expected in May 2023 and will be available in two versions – Zeta and Alpha. Both versions will feature Suzuki’s AllGrip four-wheel-drive system and a 1.5-liter petrol engine producing 104 PS, with the option of a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.
Maruti Suzuki is also preparing to launch the new Fronx in the Indian market.
