After not competing in the mid-size segment for ages, Maruti Suzuki and Toyota Kirloskar Motor with their joint efforts entered the market recently with the Grand Vitara and Urban Cruiser Hyryder. The models immediately received a ton of appreciation from the buyers in the country and now it has been reported that last month in January both of these models posted a combined sales of 12,856 units. Both of these models share the same platform and drivetrain and are built on the same assembly line by Toyota.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor manufactures both the Grand Vitara and the Urban Cruiser Hyryder at its second facility in Bidadi, near Bengaluru, Karnataka. The Toyota Hyryder and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara both have the same engine choices. Both of these SUVs come with a mild hybrid and a strong hybrid petrol engine. The mild hybrid variants of the SUVs are powered by a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine with a maximum torque of 136 Nm and 103 PS. This engine is available with both a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

A 1.5-liter, three-cylinder petrol engine paired with a strong hybrid motor is also available as an option for the SUV duo. With this configuration, an electric motor works alongside a petrol engine. Its engine has a maximum torque of 122 Nm and a horsepower rating of 93. This engine is compatible with an eCVT transmission. AWD is available on both the Grand Vitara and the Hyryder’s mild hybrid manual variants.

In terms of features both of these SUVs come available with a panoramic sunroof, leatherette upholstery in dual-tone, a multi-function steering wheel, cruise control, a HUD, a 360 degree reverse camera, 6 airbags and a tonne of other amenities. Grand Vitara and Hyryder are also the most fuel-efficient SUVs in the class thanks to a powerful hybrid technology.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor announced a price hike for the Urban Cruiser Hyryder earlier this month. The company has increased the price of the strong-hybrid variants of this compact SUV by Rs 50,000. The Hyryder’s starting price has risen to Rs 15.61 lakh as a consequence of this increase (ex-showroom). The Urban Cruiser Hyryder is offered in three trim levels: S, G, and V, all of which include a strong hybrid drivetrain. After the latest price spike, the mid-range G and top-spec V models now cost Rs 17.99 lakh and Rs 19.49 lakh (ex-showroom), respectively. Maruti has not yet announced a price hike for the Grand Vitara, but it is reasonable to anticipate that it will do so sooner or later. Currently the Grand Vitara starts at Rs. 10.45 Lakh and goes upto Rs. 19.65 Lakh.

In other news, late last month, it was announced that the waiting list for each of these Vehicles had grown significantly. Presently, waiting times for these SUVs have been reported to be as lengthy as 15 months. The waiting time for the Vehicle varies depending on the version. It has been reported that if you want to buy a Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, you may have to wait up to 9 months in major metro towns. Depending on the area, the waiting period might range from 2.5 to 9 months. Cities with the longest wait times include Noida, Gurugram, and Faridabad. Meanwhile coming to the Toyota Hyryder, the SUV’s mild hybrid variant has a high demand. It has a maximum waiting period of up to 15 months.
