Maruti Suzuki Engage based on Toyota Innova Hycross to launch on 5th July

Maruti Suzuki has recently unveiled a teaser for its upcoming premium MPV on its social media platforms. Set to be positioned above the XL6, this MPV is rumored to be named Engage and is scheduled for launch on July 5, 2023. Essentially a rebadged version of the Toyota Innova Hycross, the Engage will feature some minor exterior differentiations.

Similar to the relationship between the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, the Engage MPV will have a few tweaks to its exterior compared to the Innova Hycross. An image of the leaked front grille indicates that the Engage will share design elements with other NEXA offerings such as the XL6, Grand Vitara, and Fronx. The hexagonal grille of the Maruti Suzuki Engage will feature a honeycomb mesh pattern with chrome surrounds, complemented by a chrome slab in the middle, and flanked by all-LED headlamps.

To create a slightly distinct appearance from the Innova Hycross, the Maruti Suzuki Engage will sport faux silver skid plates below the front and rear bumpers, unique LED inserts in the tail lamps, and a different design for the 17-inch machined alloy wheels. The interior is expected to remain largely the same, with premium features including a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, wireless charger, a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and more.

Hybrid engine

The Maruti Suzuki Engage premium MPV will share its architecture and engine options with the Toyota Innova Hycross. Built on Toyota’s TNGA-C frame, the Hycross offers two powertrain options: a 2.0-liter four-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine and a 2.0-liter petrol-electric strong hybrid engine. The Engage is expected to offer both of these powertrains, with automatic transmission as standard, similar to the Innova Hycross.

The Maruti Suzuki Engage will mark the third NEXA offering from India’s largest carmaker this year, following the launches of the Fronx and Jimny SUVs. Notably, this will be the first time a Toyota product is rebadged and introduced as a Maruti Suzuki offering, as previous instances under the Toyota-Suzuki alliance involved the opposite approach. Due to its Toyota origins, the Engage is anticipated to have higher price points compared to the Innova Hycross. It will compete with other three-row SUVs and MPVs such as the MG Hector Plus, Mahindra XUV700, and Tata Safari.
