Maruti Suzuki Invicto hybrid MPV based on Innova Hycross: Bookings now open

The country’s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki, has commenced bookings for its most expensive and premium model yet, the Invicto MPV, after a few months of anticipation. Customers can reserve their Invicto by paying a booking amount of Rs 25,000, either through Maruti Suzuki’s official website or at any Nexa dealership. This new model will take the spot as the flagship product in the Maruti Suzuki lineup, sitting above the popular mid-size SUV, the Grand Vitara. The model, which is a badge-engineered sibling of the popular Toyota Innova Hycross, will be launched on July 5.

In terms of the exterior design, the upcoming Invicto, as mentioned, will be based on the Toyota Innova Hycross and will mostly look the same from the outside. There will be only a few distinguishing features on the Invicto that differentiate it from its Toyota counterpart. The main differentiating factor will be the front grille, which will sport two chrome slats, with one extending into the headlights, creating a unique and distinctive appearance. Additionally, Maruti Suzuki has made minor adjustments to the bumper, introduced new headlight and tail-light inserts, and developed an exclusive alloy wheel design.

Inside the Invicto, customers can expect subtle upholstery tweaks and alterations to the features list. These adjustments aim to strike a balance between offering a premium experience while keeping costs in check. There is a possibility that Maruti Suzuki may choose to exclude certain advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) elements or the entire package. Apart from that, most of the interior, just like the exterior, will remain the same as the Toyota Innova, which means it will include features such as ventilated front seats, a wireless charger, a panoramic sunroof, a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a full-TFT instrument console.

Regarding powertrains, the higher-end variants of the Invicto are likely to feature a robust 183hp, 2.0-liter strong-hybrid powertrain, coupled with an e-CVT transmission, similar to the Innova Hycross. On the other hand, the entry-level trims are expected to be equipped with a 173hp, 2.0-liter petrol engine paired with a CVT, making the Invicto the first Maruti Suzuki model offered exclusively with an automatic transmission.

New reports have suggested that the production of the Invicto will take place at Toyota’s Bidadi plant, alongside the Innova Hycross, mirroring the simultaneous manufacturing of the Grand Vitara and Hyryder by Toyota. As Maruti Suzuki will be utilizing Toyota’s TNGA-C platform and strong-hybrid powertrain, they will pay a royalty to Toyota, resulting in the Invicto having a higher premium pricing compared to its Toyota counterpart.

In terms of pricing, the petrol variants of the Invicto could be similarly priced as the outgoing Innova Hycross, which is currently priced between Rs 18.55 lakh and Rs 19.45 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai), while the hybrid range falls within Rs 25.03 lakh to Rs 29.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai). Meanwhile, for the competition, the Maruti Suzuki Invicto will compete in the premium MPV segment, primarily against its Toyota sibling, the Innova Hycross. Additionally, it will rival the Kia Carnival, although it carries a slightly higher price tag, ranging from Rs 30.99 lakh to Rs 35.49 lakh.
