Maruti Suzuki Jimny five door 4X4 SUV garners 15,000 bookings in India

We all knew that the newest lifestyle off-roader from Maruti Suzuki will be going to be a hit in the Indian SUV market although nobody knew that it would become such a hit this quickly. Recently the company announced that the all-new Jimny five-door has crossed the 9,000 bookings milestone. Now the company has come forward and stated that Jimny has now also breached the 15,000 bookings milestone as well. With the 9,000 bookings news, the company also announced a week ago that it is raising the reservation price from 11,000 to Rs 25,000 to avoid getting non-serious bookings.

The five-door Jimny, is the elongated iteration of the already popular three-door Jimny, and this lifestyle offroader was on the radar of many buyers in the country even before its official debut at the 2023 Auto Expo. This new SUV will be the brand’s sole offering in the country with a ladder-on-frame chassis and with a dedicated off-road system. The Jimny five-door will be built at the company’s Gujarat manufacturing plant where the t hree-door Jimny is already produced at the facility for international markets. This is the same assembly line where until 2020 Maruti Suzuki produced the legendary Gypsy as well.

In terms of changes, the Jimny five door features two more doors but else is identical to the Jimny three-doordoor. The brand-new Jimny five-door measures 3,985mm in length, 1,645mm in width, and 1,720mm in height, all of which are less than 4 metres meaning that it would be able to claim all the tax benefits in the country. The SUV’s ground clearance is 210mm. In addition, the Jimny has a 36-degree approach angle, a 24-degree ramp break-over, and a 50-degree departure angle. Maruti Suzuki recently stated that the added wheelbase will not hinder the off-roading capabilities of the Jimny five door.

The Jimny is the only vehicle that Indo-Japanese carmaker currently provides the country with a specific off-road system. The SUV is equipped with the Suzuki AllGrip Pro system, which includes 2H, 4H, and 4L low-range transfer gear. Maruti Suzuki hasn’t formally endorsed the low-ratio gearbox’s exact ratio.

The top of the line Alpha variant which the company will be focusiing on producing first according to reports will come equipped with a ton of features. Some of the amenties on the top spec varaint will include an  infotainment system with a touchscreen occupying the centre of the dashboard. Additionally, it will have the SmartPlay system, which offers alternatives for connection including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The SUV will also come equipped with 6 airbags, a brake limited slip differential (LSD), ESP with hill hold aid, hill descent control, a rearview camera, and ABS with EBD in addition to other safety measures.

The time-tested 1.5-litre four-cylinder naturally-aspirated K15C Dualjet engine from Maruti Suzuki, which also powers the revised Ertiga and XL6 and the brand-new Brezza, will power the Jimny. This engine generates 134.2 Nm of maximum torque and 104.8 PS of maximum power when assisted by a mild hybrid system. While a 5-speed manual transmission will be available as standard, a 4-speed torque converter will also be made available as an option. The engine has been tweaked by Maruti Suzuki to make it better suited for off-road driving.

In terms of the launch date of the Jimny five door it is anticipated that the company will commence the sale from May of this year. Meanwhile the price for the SUV is expected to start at Rs 12 lakh.
