Now, the country’s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, wants a bigger piece of the SUV cake in India. And because of this, the powerhouse of the Indian automotive industry has set a new goal of dominating the Indian SUV market with a bold expansion strategy. The company recently made an announcement that revealed the plans to introduce six new SUV models over the next three years.
Strategic Expansion in the SUV Segment
As the largest car manufacturer in India, Maruti Suzuki has been eyeing to grab a bigger market share in the growing SUV market in India. For this, the company launched the Grand Vitara, Jimny, and crossover SUV Fronx. However, now to further increase its dominance, it will be launching 6 new SUVs to fulfill the growing demand for SUVs in the country.
What will be these new SUVs?
The first SUV to be launched under its new expansion strategy will be the brand’s first electric vehicle, the eVX compact electric SUV. This SUV will be launched around December of this year and will take on the likes of the Tata Harrier EV and Hyundai Creta EV.
Next up, the company is looking to target the premium SUV segment with a 7-seater SUV codenamed as the Y17. This new model will be based on the outgoing Grand Vitara and will go head-to-head with the Mahindra XUV700 and Tata Safari along with Hyundai Alcazar. Launch of the Y17 is expected around the end of this year.
Next up, the company, in order to rival the popular micro-SUV segment of the country, will be launching a small SUV in 2025. This new model will take on the already popular Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter along with the Citroen C3. Additionally, the company is also gearing up for the launch of a new sub-4m SUV which will either replace the Brezza or will sit beside the Brezza in the market.
Focus on Electric Vehicles
Apart from the above-mentioned 4 SUVs, the information on two more SUVs has not been revealed by the company. However, we do know that it will be launching a few EVs in the Indian market as well.
It is believed that the company will be taking on the likes of the Tiago EV and Citroen eC3 with a brand-new small EV. The exact information about this small EV’s powertrain or design is currently unknown. The company could have been one of the earliest entrants into this small EV segment with its WagonR EV model, which it was testing in India a while ago. However, it was reported that the company scrapped those plans.
Hybrid vehicles on the horizon
In addition to electric vehicles, the company is also betting big on the strong hybrid vehicles in the country as well. This is because the company is planning to launch the new fourth-generation Swift and new Dzire with the new 1.2-litre naturally aspirated Z-Series 3-cylinder petrol engine, which will come with a strong hybrid system. This drivetrain could reportedly offer 35 kmpl mileage.
Apart from this, the company is also planning to launch the facelifted strong hybrid system-equipped version of the Fronx crossover SUV. It will utilize the company’s newly unveiled HEV series hybrid system in which the engine will act as a generator and will charge the battery pack. Meanwhile, the propulsion of the vehicle will be done by electric motors.
