iPhone 14 photography: The basics

We are going to start from the very basics and cover them first so that even if you have picked up an iPhone for the first time, you can complete the journey from novice to an expert in a matter of minutes. So first, to open the camera app, you need to click on the icon that looks like an SLR or DSLR camera. Once done, the camera is open and the majority of your device now shows you the image that can be captured. At the bottom, there is a white shutter button that clicks the image. When you record a video, this button turns into a small red square. Also, the circular arrow button lets you switch between the selfie camera and the rear cameras.

To take an image, you need to first pick between different modes. For this article, we will be focusing on the standard photo mode. Just on top of the modes menus is the lens selector. 1x is the main camera, the 0.5x is the ultrawide lens and if you have a pro model you will see a 2.5x which is the telephoto lens.

iPhone 14 camera secret tips

1. Auto modes are fine for most conditions but if you want an image where there is not enough light or the source of the light is behind the subject, you need to take control of the camera and in particular the exposure and focus.

2. To control exposure and focus with the camera app, touch and hold on the screen until the yellow square makes this expanding and contracting movement. If the foreground is dark and background is bright, then just click on the source of light and your camera will balance things out.3

3. Similarly you can slide your fingers up and down the screen to adjust the exposure.

4. Go to camera settings and turn on the grid mode. Then follow the rule of thirds. The rule is simple. Make sure to place the objects at points where the grid lines are intersecting, instead of placing them in the center. This creates a great effect.

5. Take your own picture with the subject using timers. You can alternatively also use gestures to take an image when away from the shutter button.
