Maya Hawke Shares ‘Missing Out’ From Upcoming New Album ‘Chaos Angel’

The actress and musician’s third album, Chaos Angel, will arrive on May 31

Maya Hawke knows everything and nothing at all on her latest single, “Missing Out,” set to appear on her newly-announced album Chaos Angel, out May 31. The song arrives alongside a music video directed by Alex Ross Perry, in which the singer-songwriter’s face is superimposed on the faces of characters in old film and TV clips. The video is reflective of the slight identity crisis Hawke experiences throughout the song.

“Didn’t think I’d get in/So I didn’t apply/Now I’m a drunk hanger on/Hitting on the younger guy/I buy booze for the Ivy League/With my television salary/They think they look up to me hah,” the musician and actress sings. She wrote the song after visiting her brother at Brown University. With their father being Ethan Hawke, they both could have done anything. But he chose life as a regular college student, while she opted to love on-screen and in the studio. “I was born with my foot in the door/And my mind in the gutter/And my guts on the floor,” she laments.

“There was actually a girl who went to Brown, where my brother goes to college, and we were all going around saying what our wish was for ourselves. She said, I want to write the next great American novel. It was the moment where I felt older than everyone because I laughed so hard,” Hawke shared in a statement. “I was like, ‘You are so far down the wrong track!’ Wish to write a novel. That would be a miracle. Don’t wish to write the next great American novel, that’s a nightmare! It made me feel I actually am a different place in my life than these people I was around. It totally inspired this whole song.”

“Missing Out” is one of 10 songs on Chaos Angel, her third studio album. Throughout each, Hawke cycles through the ebb and flow of relationships beginning and ending. Ultimately, she explained, “the only thing to regret is the time I’ve spent regretting.”

Chaos Angel follows last year’s full-length release, Moss.
