Meghan probably won’t visit dad in hospital after betrayal

As Thomas Markle reportedly recovers from a stroke in a San Diego-area hospital, it’s not likely that his famously estranged daughter, Meghan Markle, will make the four-hour trip from Montecito to visit him, one royal expert says.

“Meghan hasn’t released any statement and I doubt she intends to go down there. That bridge is burned,” Duncan Larcombe, a royal author and former royal editor for the U.K. tabloid The Sun, said in an interview with the Daily Beast.

Another royal expert, society author and YouTuber Lady Colin Campbell, more cynically told the Daily Beast that the Duchess of Sussex might feel under pressure to at least make it appear that she was concerned about her 77-year-old father.

Campbell also suggested that Netflix, which is reportedly filming an “at-home” “docuseries” about Meghan and Prince Harry’s lives in California as part of its $100 million deal with the couple, may hope to shoot a dramatic scene of the duchess visiting her father in the hospital, Campbell said.

“If she’s clever, she will find a way to visit and reconcile,” Campbell said. “Let’s see if Netflix leans on her. They might well do so. Filthy lucre might work where decency failed.”

The comments from Larcombe and Campbell underscore the fierce debate between Meghan’s fans and critics that has erupted in the wake of Thomas Markle’s latest health crisis, the Daily Beast reported. On Tuesday, news broke that he had suffered a stroke, lost his ability to speak and was receiving emergency care in a Chula Vista hospital, according to GB News presenter Dan Wootton.

The retired Hollywood lighting designer, who has emerged as one of Meghan’s highest profile critics since her marriage to Prince Harry, apparently suffered the stroke in Rosarito, the Mexican town where he lives. TMZ said he couldn’t speak to paramedics and needed to write his symptoms on a piece of paper. The ambulance transported him to a hospital north of the U.S. border in Chula Vista.

Thomas Markle was scheduled to travel to the UK to enjoy Queen Elizabeth’s II Platinum Jubilee celebrations next week. He was to be feted by some of Meghan’s well-known media detractors, including Campbell and Wootton, who was one of the first journalists to report on her father’s stroke.

“I’m devastated to report this news, just seven days before Thomas would have joined me in London to celebrate the Queen’s jubilee for a TV special on my GB News show, fulfilling his long-held wish to visit Windsor,” Wootton tweeted. “In a cruel twist of fate, he’ll now be unable to make the trip.”

If Thomas Markle had traveled to the U.K., he could have been in London at the same time as Meghan and Harry. The Sussexes also plan to travel to the U.K. next week to participate in some of the celebrations and to perhaps attempt to repair their conflicts with Harry’s family.

Meghan’s fans and critics are debating whether she should forgive her father and reconcile with him. Meghan and her father reportedly were once close, as he helped raise her in Los Angeles after his divorce from her mother, Doria Ragland, and said he paid for her education in private schools and at Northwestern University.

The duchess and her father had a dramatic falling out in the days before her May 2018 royal wedding. A report revealed that he had collaborated with a paparazzo on staging photos of him as he prepared to travel to the U.K. to walk her down the aisle. After the report, Thomas Markle suffered a heart attack and missed the wedding.

Thomas Markle admitted he accepted money for the photos but argued that he did so  in a naïve attempt to improve his image, and after being worn down by the pressure of being surveilled by paparazzi.

It was revealed in Meghan’s successful invasion of privacy U.K. court case against the Daily Mail, that she and Harry had sent him conciliatory text messages after news of the photos broke. Thomas Markle, however, claimed in a 2020 interview that Harry called him in his hospital bed and yelled at him for talking to a reporter. He claimed Prince Harry told him: “If you had listened to me, this would not have happened to you.”

Thomas Markle said that was his last contact with either Harry or Meghan. He thereafter began giving interviews to the media during which he often criticized the couple.

Larcombe told the Daily Beast that it was hard to imagine Meghan rushing to see her father in the hospital right now. “If you look at what he did before the wedding, that’s hardly surprising. He has claimed it was naivety, but it was clearly duplicitous,” Larcombe said.

One of Meghan’s many online supporters agreed that Thomas Markle had betrayed his daughter. The fan also expected that Meghan would be blamed for his health problems.

Indeed, Meghan’s half-sister Samantha Markle, another of her voluble critics, already has accused the duchess and her fiercely loyal social media fans of causing their father’s latest health crisis.

Samantha Markle told Wooton: “It’s a travesty how much he’s been tortured and how much he’s had to go through thanks to my sister’s disregard the past few years. That is unforgivable.”

Meghan’s critics also brought up the issue of Thomas Markle’s medical bills, which could be extensive, according to Wootton. On Wednesday, Wootton tweeted: “There is fury among the Markle family that Thomas has been left to fund his own medical treatment, with the Sussexes providing no financial support since their public falling out.”

Wootton said that Meghan was the only one of Thomas Markle’s three children to not reach out and check on his condition. “Meghan, life is too short to treat your blood relatives with such cruelty,” Wootton said.
