Mercedes driver Dr. Anahita Pandole booked by police for rash & negligent driving
The tragic Mercedes Benz SUV crash that claimed the lives of noted businessman Cyrus Mistry and his friend Jehangir Pandole has led to the driver of the ill-fated luxury SUV being booked by the Maharashtra police for rash and negligent driving. Dr. Anahita Pandole was driving the Mercedes Benz GLC luxury SUV moments before it crashed into a wall adjoining the bridge on the Ahmedabad-Mumbai highway. Dr. Pandole is currently recuperating at a Mumbai hospital.
Her husband and CEO of JM Financial – Darius Pandole – was in the front passenger seat at the time of crash, and was recently discharged from a Mumbai hospital. Mr. Pandole recently recorded his statement about the crash, and stated that his wife Anahita lost control while overtaking a heavy vehicle as the road unexpectedly transitioned from three lanes to two.

An FIR has been registered against Dr Anahita Pandole under sections 304A (causing death by negligence), 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 337 (causing hurt to any person by doing any act so rashly or negligently as to endanger human life, or the personal safety of others), 338 (causing grievous hurt to any person by doing any act so rashly or negligently as to endanger human life, or the personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code, and other sections of the Motor Vehicle Act at Kasa police station. We are yet to record her statement in connection with the case.

The tragic crash that saw Mr. Cyrus Mistry and Jehnagir Pandole dying nearly instantly was yet another accident where the passengers on the rear seat – Mr. Mistry and Mr. Pandole – weren’t wearing seatbelts. Had they worn seatbelts, it’s likely that they would have survived the crash like the front passengers – Anahita and Darius Pandole. Both Dr. Anahita and Darius Pandole were wearing seatbelts.

Seatbelts are passengers’ first line of defence in cars. They work by keeping the passengers secured to the seat during a crash, ensuring that they don’t suffer major whiplash injuries while also making sure that they’re not flung around in the car, or out of the car during a crash. Soon, cars sold in India will also get rear-seat belt warning chimes as standard. Also, the government has cracked down on online marketplaces that sell seat-belt warning chime blockers.
