Michelle Yeoh Is First Asian Actress To Win ‘Best Actress’ In Oscars

Actress Michelle Yeoh created history as she took home the ‘Best Actress’ award for her performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” 60 year old Michelle became the first Asian actress to win the Oscars in ‘Best Actress’ category.

Yeoh emotionally took the stage, where she was greeted to a standing ovation by the crowd and her castmates, including fellow winner, Jamie Lee Curtis.

“For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibilities,” Yeoh began. “This is proof that — dream big, and dreams do come true. And ladies, don’t let anybody tell you that you are past your prime. Never.”

Yeoh dedicated the award to her mom and all the mothers in the world. “They are real the superheroes, and without them, none of us will be here tonight. She’s 84. And I’m taking this home to her. She’s watching right now in Malaysia with my family and friends. I love you guys, I’m bringing this home to you.”

“I wouldn’t be standing here tonight without the Daniels, without the amazing cast and crew [and] everyone involved with ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once,’” she continued.

“Also, my extended family in Hong Kong, where I started my career. Thank you for letting me stand on your shoulders.”

This is an extra special moment for Michelle, as it marked just the second time a woman of colour has won for Best Actress, with Halle Berry first winning the award in 2001 for Monster’s Ball (2002).

The Malaysian-born star, gained worldwide recognition with her performance in movies like Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon(2000), Memoirs of a Geisha (2005).

Meanwhile, ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ took home seven Oscars on Sunday night, including best picture, director, original screenplay, lead actress, supporting actress, supporting actor and editing.
