Misusing ADAS on Mahindra XUV700 leads to a crash: Caught on video
Autonomous Driver Assistance System or ADAS is a relatively new technology in India, especially in affordable mass-segment cars. The XUV700 was one of the first models to introduce the ADAS in the affordable segment in India. Since the brand started the delivery of the XUV700 in 2022, thousands of vehicles with ADAS are on the roads. We have seen numerous videos until now that show drivers misusing the ADAS feature on public roads in the past. Here is a case in which the driver claims that the car steered itself and jumped from the road when the ADAS was activated.
The incident happened in Gurgaon, Haryana. According to the information available, the XUV700 was travelling on the highway and the ADAS was turned on. We presume that the lane departure warning and lane keep assistance were also turned on since the information says that the car steered itself.

The vehicle was travelling at around 90 km/h and was crossing a turn on the highway. The XUV700 reportedly steered itself from the road and went down the road. Since the road was made on higher ground, the XUV700 overturned.
The vehicle reportedly turned over a few times before coming to a complete rest. The videos of the badly damaged XUV700 show that the front did not get any impact. The C-Pillar crashed though. The driver-side airbag also did not open because of the point of impact. Two persons were travelling in the vehicle when the accident happened. One of them escaped with a few minor injuries while the other person received some serious injuries but is out of danger.
Many instances of ADAS misuse
In the recent past, we have seen several examples in which people are seen engaging the ADAS feature on and doing other things in the car, like playing ludo, eating food and even sleeping. Doing such antics while driving is dangerous not only for the driver and other occupants of that vehicle but also for other motorists nearby that vehicle.
Carmakers are offering Level-1 and Level-2 ADAS functions in India, which allow people to have a semi-autonomous driving experience with the vehicle taking partial control of its movement. These features have been introduced to make your driving experience easier and safer, but their misuse can put drivers and other occupants in such vehicles in danger.
As mentioned multiple times, this is not a full-time driverless system. The ADAS is an assistance system that makes driving easy. That is why it is mandatory to keep hands on the steering wheel and attention on the road just like we do in vehicles without any ADAS. In fact, safety features automatically disengage the ADAS once it cannot detect the hands of the driver after a few seconds.
Even Tesla cars are not driverless
Tesla autopilot system has been abused and misused several times in the past. The official website of the carmaker says, “Autopilot is a hands-on driver assistance system that is intended to be used only with a fully attentive driver. It does not turn a Tesla into a self-driving car”.
The autopilot mode cannot be activated unless the driver agrees to keep their hands on the steering wheel at all times and to always maintain control and responsibility for the car. Since different states of the USA have different rules, the California state stipulates that autopilot cars have someone behind the wheels at all times.
