Mumbai Airport: Congestion Forces Domestic Airlines to Cancel Flights

Several domestic airlines, including Akasa and Spicejet, have made the decision to cancel flights at Mumbai Airport in an effort to alleviate air traffic congestion.

Mumbai Airport, known as one of the busiest hubs in the country, has been grappling with runway congestion and airspace saturation, causing flights to circle over the city for extended periods, ranging from 40 to 60 minutes. This prolonged circling time not only leads to increased fuel consumption but also adds significant costs for airlines and passengers alike.

Aircraft, on average, consume 2000kg of fuel per hour, translating to substantial financial losses ranging from approximately Rs 1.8 lakh to Rs 2.6 lakhs per flight depending on the circling duration. The situation has prompted concerns about fuel wastage, operational inefficiencies, and passenger dissatisfaction.

The Airport Authority of India, recognizing the urgency of the situation, issued directives aimed at regulating air traffic movements during peak hours. The measures include restricting air traffic movements during High Intensity Runway Operations (HIRO) hours, from 0800 hrs. to 1100 hrs. and 1700 to 2000 hrs., in an effort to ease congestion.

However, while these actions are necessary for airspace safety and operational efficiency, they have prompted domestic airlines to cancel flights to comply with the new regulations. This move underscores the delicate balance between meeting the needs of airport operators, airlines, and passengers.

While Mumbai Airport is currently operating at full capacity, the persistent congestion is attributed to several factors, including excessive slot distribution, non-adherence to slots by airlines, and non-scheduled operations during peak hours.
