Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor accelerates with significant progress on key infrastructure including tunnels and river bridges, aiming for faster connectivity.

After many delays and pauses, the bullet train corridor construction from Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) to Zaroli village on the Maharashtra-Gujarat border, is picking pace.

This stretch covers 156 kilometres of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor. An official told the Free Press Journal that the Mumbai to Zaroli stretch will have several complex elevated structures, which include a “21-kilometre-long tunnel, with 7 kilometres passing beneath the sea, along with 6 mountain tunnels.”

The route will also have “36 crossings, featuring 11 steel and river bridges” that will pass over the Vaitarna, Ulhas, and Jagani rivers. The bridge set to be built over the Vaitarna river during this project will be the longest river bridge in the entire bullet train project. It will be 2.32 kilometres long.

The official said, “The ongoing construction efforts are making significant strides, with several key milestones achieved. Land acquisition for the project stands at 100 percent, providing a solid foundation for the development.

Additionally, cleaning and grubbing works are well underway, alongside advanced stages of geotechnical investigations. Open foundation work is also progressing rapidly, marking a tangible step forward in the corridor’s realisation.”

As per Rail Analysis India, the geotechnical investigation is 50 per cent complete and the open foundation work has been completed at 19 locations, while it is in progress at 42 locations.

The BKC to Zaroli stretch includes three bullet train stops at Thane, Virar, and Boisar. All of these stops fall under Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Thousands of people commute daily from these suburbs of Mumbai via local trains, buses, and private vehicles.

The bullet train corridor will have a total of 12 stations, eight of them will be in Gujarat and four in Maharashtra. These stops are Sabarmati, Ahmedabad, Anand, Vadodara, Bharuch, Surat, Vapi, and Bilimora in Gujarat, while, Boisar, Virar, Thane, and Mumbai in Maharashtra.

The ambitious Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor is an under-construction high-speed rail line, which aims to connect India’s economic and financial hub, Mumbai, with the largest city of Gujarat, Ahmedabad.

Upon its competition, it will become India’s first high-speed rail line. The 508-kilometre-long rail line will have trains running on the speed of 320 km per hour, which will reduce travel time to just 2 hours.
