MRVC’s groundbreaking project kicks off: Fifth and sixth rail lines to boost Mumbai’s Western Railway efficiency. Construction begins Dec 1.

Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) is gearing up to initiate the construction of the highly anticipated fifth and sixth lines between Borivli and Virar on December 1.

The project’s first crucial step involves clearing the path by removing structures obstructing the proposed corridor alignment.

Presently, the Western Railway’s suburban network boasts four lines from Churchgate to Mumbai Central and from Borivli to Virar, with an additional fifth line from Mumbai Central to Borivli, along with a sixth line between Khar and Goregaon.

The ambitious plan for the extension of the sixth line to Borivli by the end of 2025 is set to revolutionize rail travel in the region. The primary objective of this extensive line expansion is to efficiently segregate mail-express and suburban section rail traffic between Mumbai Central and Virar, promising a substantial enhancement in WR’s operational efficiency.

MRVC’s chairman and managing director, SC Gupta, expressed excitement about the milestone, stating, “This marks the initiation of the first contract awarded for this project, executed under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) 3A.”

The upcoming phase involves the removal of 47 railway structures, including booking offices, relay rooms, toilet blocks, and offices, to pave the way for the additional tracks. The bidding process for the construction of foot over bridges is scheduled to commence on December 10.

MRVC has successfully completed the survey to determine the optimal alignment for the new lines and has submitted a proposal for land acquisition to the collector. Additionally, a proposal to address tree removal for the lines’ development has been submitted to civic authorities.
