MMRDA has already outlined plans for an extensive 337-km metro rail network across MMR, excluding the proposed Virar-Alibaug route.

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has begun examining the feasibility of a metro rail spanning 136km from Virar to Alibaug, marking a significant departure from its usual focus on roads and bridges.

This metro project is set to become the longest in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

Part of the Rs 55,000 crore Virar-Alibaug Multimodal Corridor, designed as a 14-lane expressway with a speed limit of 120 kmph, the metro aims to enhance transportation efficiency. Scheduled for completion by 2030, the project comprises two phases: Phase 1 spans 98.5 km from Navghar to Balavali, while Phase 2 stretches 129.9 km from Balavali to Alibaug, as reported by HT.

Named a ‘multimodal corridor’, it integrates various transport modes like roads, rail, and metro. The proposed metro line, expected to feature around 40 stations, will run parallel to this corridor, connecting vital MMR suburbs.

An official from MSRDC stated that a detailed project report will follow the initial feasibility study, projected to conclude within 6-8 months. The metro line aims to link the proposed Navi Mumbai airport and JNPA.

Despite being part of the multimodal corridor, authorities will review potential adjustments to costs, routes, and other specifics. Originally planned from Kharbao in Bhiwandi to Alibag, experts like AV Shenoy advocate for suburban rail lines over elevated metro ones due to lower costs and better integration with existing systems.

Decisions regarding the location of the metro’s car depot remain pending, promising enhanced connectivity across Vasai-Virar, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Uran, Pen, and Alibag. MSRDC’s feasibility study aligns with the state government’s contemplation of transferring the corridor project to MMRDA, specialists in metro rail implementation.
