Narrowing of road flustered Anahita
Darius Pandole, one of the two survivors of the Mercedes Benz crash that killed business tycoon Cyrus Mistry and Jehangir Pandole, has given his statement to the Maharastra police. Mr. Pandole, in his statement to police officials, has noted that the sudden narrowing of the road caused his wife Anahita – who was driving the car – to lose control and ram into the wall of the bridge. Darius Pandole is the CEO and MD of JM Financial.
Balasaheb Patil, Superintendent of Police (SP), Palghar District, had this to say about Mr. Pandole’s statement on the accident that tragically killed Cyrus Mistry and Mr Pandole’s brother Jehangir,
We got to know he was discharged and doctors gave us the heads-up on his condition, so we sent two officers to record his statement as a witness. As per his statement to us, a heavy vehicle was right in front of their SUV. She was trying to move past the vehicle when suddenly the three-lane highway merged into a two-lane road. Flustered by the transition, and in order to not cause an accident, she rammed into the bridge wall spanning the river.
Anahita was overtaking a truck leading to the bridge on the Ahmedabad-Mumbai highway. The road leading to the bridge built across the Surya river narrows from 3 lanes to 2 lanes at the point where it meets the bridge. It’s at this point where Anahita Pandole rammed the Mercedes Benz into the bridge wall. Anahita Pandole – a noted gynaecologist from Mumbai – continues to be in hospital, being treated for her injuries that she suffered in the crash. Police officials are now waiting for Anahita Pandole to be discharged from the hospital to record her statement on the crash.

Anahita and Darius Pandole were in the front passenger and driver seats respectively. Both of them were wearing seatbelts. Mr. Cyrus Mistry and Jehangir Pandole were in the rear of the Mercedes Benz GLC 220d luxury SUV, and were allegedly not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. The crash left the front passengers severely injured while those at the rear were flung into the front seat-backs. This blunt force is said to be cause of deaths of Mr. Cyrus Mistry and Mr. Jehangir Pandole. Mercedes Benz experts, who flew in from Hong Kong to investigate the crash, are yet to submit their forensic report to the Maharashtra police.

Following the crash and tragic death of Mr. Cyrus Mistry – one of India’s best known and wealthiest businessman – the Government of India announced fresh safety regulations making seat belts mandatory for all car passengers in front facing seats. Union Transport Minister Mr. Nitin Gadkari has also announced that seat belt warning chimes will soon be mandatory even for rear seats, and banned seat belt chime-blocking devices sold online on portals such as Amazon and Flipkart. Police forces in Delhi, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Kerala states have already begun fining motorists found not wearing rear seatbelts.
