Netflix Raises Curtain on ‘Stranger Things’ Play

stage play based on its “Stranger Things” series will premiere in London later this year and shed light on the beginning of the franchise’s story, the company said Wednesday.
The play—Netflix’s first live stage production—is titled “Stranger Things: The First Shadow” and set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Ind., in 1959, more than two decades before the first scene in the show.
In announcing further details of the play, Netflix teased its inclusion of main characters from the show, including a young version of Jim Hopper, the small town’s police chief in the streaming series, as well as the introduction of new ones.
“Stranger Things” is among Netflix’s most successful franchises and one that it continues to build on with the coming play and immersive experiences in select cities in which fans participate in show-themed stories and interact with characters.
Popular franchises are key to streaming platforms because they help draw in and keep fans long term, building brand loyalty and reducing the rate of customer defections. Netflix said in its most recent shareholder letter that subscribers watched more sequels and returning seasons in 2022 than ever before.
The company has explored a range of in-person attractions for fans of its shows and films, from “Bridgerton”-themed balls to a coming game with the full-body, virtual-reality-experience company Sandbox VR that is based on “Squid Game” and an experience in which fans solve timed challenges that was based on “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.”
“Stranger Things” made its debut in 2016, and Netflix released its fourth season last year. That fourth installment, released in two parts, drew 1.35 billion hours of viewing time, making it the most-watched English-language TV series on Netflix.
The Duffer brothers, its creators, announced in July that they had formed a production company called Upside Down Pictures as part of an overall deal with Netflix. Projects the company is working on include the play, a “Stranger Things” spinoff series and an original series.
The play is “a journey into the past that sets the groundwork for the future of Stranger Things,”

said in a statement. It will debut in London’s West End at the Phoenix Theatre, with tickets on sale in the spring.
