New spyshots show the Zeta trim of the off-road 4X4 SUV

0 28

Maruti Suzuki unveiled the legendary Jimny off roader at the 2023 Indian Auto Expo, and India will be the first market in the world to get the SUV in its most practical form – a 5 door layout. Bookings for the 5 door Jimny are now open at all Maruti Suzuki NEXA showrooms across India, and the off-roader will soon be launched in India. While Maruti Suzuki showcased the top-end Alpha trim of the Jimny at the 2023 Auto Expo, the off-roader will also be available in a lower Zeta trim. Here are the first spyshots of the Jimny in Zeta trim.

The Zeta trim of the Jimny is likely to be significantly cheaper than the top-spec Alpha trim. Of course, there will be a bunch of feature deletions to arrive at the lower price tag. Most hard core off-roaders won’t really mind. We’ll get to that in just a bit. First let’s look at the visual difference that are discernable from the spyshots.

As the spyshots reveal, the Jimny 5 door’s Zeta trim will get steel wheels in place of alloys, 195 section tyres (same as the ones on Alpha trim), and the door handles are finished in black instead of being body-coloured. As for features, the auto projector headlamps with washer functions will make way for conventional halogen units and the large 9 inch touchscreen will get dumped for a smaller 7 inch unit. Cruise control, fog lamps, electric wing mirrors, start / stop button, leather wrapped steering wheel, automatic climate control and a 4 speaker stereo (instead of the 6 speaker Arkamys unit) are likely to be other feature deletions.

What won’t change?

What won’t change is the core mechanical specifications of the 5-door Jimny, even in Zeta trim. And this is what will matter to hard-core off roaders. Steel wheels make for excellent abuse tolerance when compared to alloy wheels, and this is something that the off-road community will be quite happy about in the Zeta trim.

The engine, gearbox and four wheel drive transfer case see no changes. The engine is the tried and tested K15B unit (punchier than the K15C unit) displacing 1.5 liters in a 4 cylinder layout, with about 100 Bhp-135 Nm on tap. The gearbox is a five speed manual as standard while the 4 speed torque converter automatic gearbox will be served up as an option.

The price announcement of the Jimny is expected to happen in the coming weeks. The grapevine suggests a 9.99 lakh rupee starting price for the 5 door Jimny, a price that should give the Maruti off-roader a solid advantage over the Mahindra Thar, whose 2WD variant is available at the same price point. While the Thar offers much more street presence than the Jimny and more powerful turbo petrol and turbo diesel engines, the Jimny pulls things back with a more practical 5 door layout (easy to get-in and out), a tried and tested petrol engine, a compact footprint, much lower kerb weight (better fuel efficiency?) and legendry off-road pedigree. Over to the launch now.
