Over the last few months, a number of cities have taken actions against Royal Enfield motorcycle riders with illegal modified silencers, setting an example for other cities and states of the country. Recently, Pune’s traffic police launched a rigorous campaign targeting modified motorcycle silencers. In the most recent crackdown, authorities seized a total of 571 illegal loud and polluting silencers and then crushed them with a road roller to warn other people of these illegal modifications. The authorities have also issued a new WhatsApp number in which people can directly report their complaints for modified silencers.

The video of Pune Traffic police and transport department authorities crushing the illegal loud silencers has been shared on Instagram by Pune News 9 on their channel. It starts off with the drone showing all of the seized Royal Enfield motorcycles, including Bullets, Classic 350s and 500s, and some Thunderbird motorcycles. It shows people taking out these silencers and lining them up in front of a road roller. Following the completion of the lineup of all 571 silencers, the road roller proceeds to crush them all.

Apart from sending a strong message to the people who install illegal modifications on their bikes, the Pune police and transport department authorities have also initiated a whistleblower program. Under this program, they are urging citizens to report instances of modified exhaust systems, particularly those emitting excessive noise. To facilitate this, authorities have introduced a dedicated WhatsApp number in which residents can easily notify officials of motorcycles equipped with loud silencers.

Other cities have also taken similar actions

A few months ago, it was reported that the city of Hyderabad also took actions against modified silencers on bikes. It was reported that the police authorities seized approximately 1,000 vehicles equipped with modified silencers within the city limits. Like in Pune, Hyderabad police authorities also crushed all of these silencers to share a strong message with other citizens who may have installed these noise-creating silencers. Additionally, another similar situation was shared from Goa where the law enforcement agencies in Margao seized around 40 motorcycles and registered 45 cases related to illegal modifications.

Why is this crackdown taking place?

For those who may not be aware, this crackdown is taking place across the country by different state police departments to curb noise and air pollution. These aftermarket silencers, which are generally installed in Royal Enfield motorcycles, increase the noise produced by the engine. They are also less restrictive and cause more pollution by emitting more fumes and harmful gases. It has to be noted that other motorcycles with loud modified silencers have also been scrutinized, and police authorities over the last few months have also seized a number of high-end superbikes with modified silencers as well. The government of India over the last few years has passed various bills which have made modifying cars and bikes in the country illegal and if caught these vehicles are seized and the owners are issued challans.
