The government will not allow companies and intermediaries operating in the gaming sector to control or dictate the narrative at self-regulatory organisations, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar said.

“We are going by the principle of accountability and transparency. The government will certainly not allow the industry to hijack the self-regulatory organisation,” Chandrasekhar said.

The SROs would be adequately represented by all stakeholders, he added.

On Wednesday, Chandrasekhar met parents, schools and teachers’ associations to discuss various aspects of the draft online gaming rules.

Sources said that the associations sought assurances from the IT ministry that the SRO, which will have members from the gaming industry, would operate at “arm’s length” and not interfere in the policy-making process.

In the draft of the online gaming rules released on January 2, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has proposed a self-regulatory body for the online gaming industry.

The self-regulatory body would be responsible for certifying games and would also be responsible to ensure that the online games which operate in India follow rules and regulations. Apart from the SRO, the IT ministry has also proposed a mandatory know-your-customer (KYC) verification of online gamers.

The draft rules also require gaming companies and intermediaries to appoint a grievance redressal officer, a nodal contact person and a chief compliance officer along with having a physical office in India.
