Roy Wood Jr. Mouths ‘Please Hire a Host’ as ‘The Daily Show’ Wins Emmy

Roy Wood Jr. had a subliminal message for Comedy Central as Trevor Noah accepted his Emmy Award on Monday night: “Please hire a host.”

As Trevor Noah accepted the award for Outstanding Talk Series for his final season as host of The Daily Show on Comedy Central Monday night, Wood Jr., one of the correspondents on the show, silently mouthed his plea to find a replacement for Noah. (The show has been rotating guest hosts since the show since Noah’s departure.)

“Please hire a host. We don’t care. Please hire a host,” he said.

Quote-tweeting an account that captured the moment on X shortly after, Wood Jr. joked, “Chill fam I was trying to do that in the low.”

Earlier in the night, Wood Jr. shared a photo of himself with several of the members of the Daily Show cast. “When you left the job but still get invited to the company party,” he wrote.

The comedian spoke to Rolling Stone back in October about his decision to leave the show altogether after eight years as a correspondent.

“Think of it like football. The job of correspondent is the wide receiver, and the host is the quarterback. And I don’t know that I’m going to be chosen to host,” he said at the time. “And if I’m not chosen to host, I don’t know if the new host A) will want me, or B) is running an offense that fits me as a wide receiver.”

“There’s a world where I still get offered the show, and there’s a world where I get offered something else,” he added. “But I just know that to figure out what I want to do next, just as a contingency and cover my own ass, I can’t do that while I’m doing my job as correspondent. It would disrespect the job of correspondent.”

The comedian also reflected on the biggest learning lessons he took with him after working with Noah on the show. “Knowing when to leave. Just recognizing when it’s time for you to try and do something else. When it’s time to level up into something bigger,” he said. “Whether it be with Comedy Central or not, I need to take that time to home in on exactly what that is that I want to do. Trevor never really got upset. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him mad. Ever.”

“He’s definitely diplomatic and definitely knows how to lead by example. He’s not a general like, say, Jon Stewart was. Trevor’s more Cool Hand Luke with it,” he added.

Whoever they land to host The Daily Show permanently is supposed to begin in 2024, but Comedy Central hasn’t yet made a decision on who will succeed Noah.
