Ryan Goslingm Emily Blunt Debate Barbie and Oppenheimer

Barbie and Oppenheimer are both nominated for Best Picture at this year’s Academy Awards and the months-long tension between the films has peaked

The months-long tension between Barbie and Oppenheimer culminated in an epic standoff between Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling at the 2024 Academy Awards. The actress and actor served as one-person armies for their respective sides of the Barbenheimer battle, determined to bring the debate to a close once and for all.

“Ken and Kitty, just leaving all of that trouble in the dust, right Ryan?” Blunt offered, referencing their characters and extending what looked only for a moment like an offer of a truce. But then she added: “And the way this awards season turned out, it wasn’t that much of a rivalry.”

The awards shows leading up tot he 2024 Oscars have seen big wins for Oppenheimer, but Gosling has faith that they saved the best for last. “I think I kind of figured out why they call it ‘Barb-enheimer,’ and they didn’t call it ‘Oppen-Barbie,’” he told Blunt. “I think you guys are at the tail end of that because you were riding Barbie‘s coattails all summer.”

The spat escalated into Blunt calling Gosling out for having to have his abs painted on, which struck a deeper chord than any other shots that were fired. Just after the skit, which came as a tribute to stunt performers, the award for Best Supporting Actor was presented. It provided team Oppenheimer with another victory as Robert Downey Jr. was presented with the Oscar, beating out Gosling.

With that, the Barbenheimer battle rages on — the films still have to face off for Best Picture. But with the way the night is going, both Barbie and Oppenheimer might need to look over their shoulder for a potential sneak attack from Poor Things. The film beat both films twice so far, taking home the trophies for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design, and defeated Oppenheimer in Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
