Mira Murati, OpenAI’s chief technology officer, will step in as interim CEO, the company said, adding it has initiated a formal search for a permanent leader to succeed Altman.

The sudden management shuffle surprised many employees, who learned of the decision through an internal announcement and the company’s public blog.

“Altman’s departure follows a thorough review process by the board, concluding that he was not consistently transparent in his communications, hindering the board’s ability to fulfill its responsibilities. The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI,” the company said in its blog. The blog, however, did not provide any further details.

Altman took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce his departure. “I loved my time at OpenAI. it was transformative for me personally, and hopefully the world a little bit. Most of all I loved working with such talented people. Will have more to say about what’s next later.”

The post also read, “As a part of this transition, Greg Brockman – who helped Altman start the company – will step down as chairman of the board but continue as the president of the company, reporting to the CEO.”

Brockman announced on messaging platform X late on Friday. “Based on today’s news, i quit,” he wrote.

Backed by Microsoft, OpenAI gained attention last November with the release of its ChatGPT chatbot, sparking the generative AI trend.

Altman, known for running Y Combinator, played a prominent role in representing OpenAI and its popular generative AI technology, which generates human-like responses to queries.

“Microsoft remains committed to Mira and their team as we bring this next era of AI to our customers,” a spokesperson for the software said, according to a Reuters report.

Murati, who has worked for Tesla previously, joined OpenAI in 2018 and later became the company’s chief technology officer. She oversaw products launches including ChatGPT.

At an emergency all-hands meeting on Friday afternoon after the announcement, Murati sought to calm employees and said OpenAI’s partnership with Microsoft is stable and its backer’s executives, including CEO Satya Nadella, continue to express confidence in the startup, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters.

The launch of OpenAI’s generative AI chatbot ChatGPT ignited a race in AI, forcing tech giants Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Meta to step in the race.

Microsoft has invested billions of dollars in OpenAI and has woven the company’s technology into its offerings, including search engine Bing.

Altman also testified before US Congress about AI and spoken with heads of state about the technology, as pressure ramps up to regulate against risks such as AI’s potential use in bioweapons, misinformation and other threats.
