According to info provided by TrendForce, a market intelligence firm, Samsung crushed Apple in Q1 2023. The main reason for this is the company’s Galaxy S23 series of devices, it seems.

Samsung crushed Apple in Q1 2023, mainly thanks to the Galaxy S23

Apple flew high in Q4 last year thanks to the iPhone 14, but in Q1 2023, things were reversed. Samsung managed to grab 24.6% of the market, which is a 5.5% increase QoQ (Quarter-on-Quarter), in comparison to Q4 2022. YoY (Year-over-Year), however, the company has seen a decline of 16.7%.

That being said, Apple was second-placed in Q1 2023, with 21.3% of the market. That’s a huge 27.5% decline compared to Q4 2022. It’s an 11.9% decline compared to the same period last year (Q1 2022).

Xiaomi has seen a considerable decline, both QoQ and YoY

OPPO was third-placed with 10.7% of the market. That company has also seen a decline of 17% QoQ, and 33.8% YoY. Xiaomi was fourth-placed with 10.6%, with a considerable 27.4% decline QoQ, and 40.4% YoY.

To round up the top five companies, Vivo snuck into fifth-placed with an 8% of the market. Vivo has seen a 14.2% decline QoQ, and a 12.3% decline YoY.

As you can see, all five companies have declined YoY, with Xiaomi being the most affected, and followed rather closely by OPPO. Apple has seen the least drop-off YoY, followed by Vivo and Samsung.

It is worth noting that both Redmi and POCO brands fall under the Xiaomi umbrella. The same goes for IQOO, which falls under Vivo sales. All of that is counted in here.

This was the worst quarter for smartphone sales since 2014

TrendForce reports that this was the worst quarter since 2014 when smartphone shipments are concerned. A total of 250 million units were sold, which is a 19.5% decline compared to last year. The global economic environment is to blame, first and foremost.
