Samsung debuts June update on Galaxy Note 20, Fold 4 in the US

0 27

Samsung has begun rolling out the June 2023 Android security patch to its Galaxy devices. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Note 20 series in the US are getting the first dib at the company’s latest security update. Other models will join the party soon as the Korean behemoth expands the release to more markets.

The June SMR (Security Maintenance Release) for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 is currently available to users with a factory-unlocked unit in the US. The new firmware build number for the phone is F936U1UES2CWE1. The rollout is widely available on most networks. It should reach carrier-locked units in the coming days. Samsung doesn’t appear to be pushing anything apart from the latest security fixes (more on that later) to the big foldable.

The new security patch for the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is also initially rolling out to unlocked units in the US. The update for the last Note phones bears the build number N981U1UES4HWE1 (via). The rollout for these phones isn’t as widely available as for the Galaxy Z Fold 4, but it should just be a matter of time before Samsung covers all eligible units, including the carrier-locked ones. Don’t expect any notable new goodies here, though. It’s all about this month’s security fixes.

The June update contains more than 60 security fixes for Galaxy devices

Samsung’s updated security bulletin reveals that the June 2023 SMR contains patches for more than 60 vulnerabilities. Among those are 11 Galaxy-specific patches, which the company refers to as Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE). These issues don’t exist on Android products from other brands. The Korean firm patched issues with the Exynos baseband, Knox ID, and various other system apps, services, and components.

The remaining 50-odd patches concern issues on Android OS and other partner components that make up Android devices. These fixes come from Google or the respective vendor of a compromised component. At least three of these patches were for critical security flaws, while the rest were high-severity issues. Samsung will soon push these security fixes to more Galaxy devices around the world.

Meanwhile, if you’re using an unlocked Galaxy Z Fold 4, Galaxy Note 20, or Galaxy Note 20 Ultra in the US, watch out for a notification prompting you to download the OTA (over the air) update in the coming days. You can also manually check for updates from the Settings app. While the Galaxy Z Fold 4 will get the Android 14 update later this year, the Galaxy Note 20 duo will not get updates beyond Android 13.
