Samsung has started pushing out the December 2022 Android security patch to the Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy A12. The latest security update for these Galaxy devices is rolling out in several markets around the world, including the US. The December SMR (Security Maintenance Release) has already reached dozens of other Galaxy models.

In the US, the December SMR for the Galaxy Z Flip 4G is rolling out to both carrier-locked and unlocked models. The updated firmware versions for the two variants are F700USQS5HVL2 and F700U1UES5HVL2, respectively (via). The release is already available pretty widely on Verizon, AT&T, Comcast, Xfinity Mobile, and Cricket Wireless networks. The remaining few carriers should also join in the act soon.

Users with an unlocked 5G model of the Galaxy Z Flip in the US are also getting the December SMR. The update comes with firmware version F707U1UES3GVL1. Its carrier-locked counterpart has yet to pick up the latest security release. The international versions of Samsung’s original clamshell foldable (both 4G and 5G models), meanwhile, have been getting the December SMR since early this month. The company has expanded the rollout to more markets in recent days.

The Galaxy A12, on the other hand, started picking up the December update in international markets recently and the rollout has now reached the US as well. The update is live for carrier-locked units with firmware version A125USQS5CVL2 or A125USQS5CVL6 depending on your network provider. The same release comes with firmware version A125NKSU2CVL1 in South Korea and A125FXXU2CVL1 in Europe. A wider rollout in all of these markets should begin soon.

Note that the Galaxy A12 will not get Android 13. This budget handset arrived on the market in December 2020 running Android 10 out of the box. It will end its life on Android 12. Security updates will come at least until December 2024. So you won’t run out of updates for two more years. You can check for the latest release from the Software update section in the Settings app.

Samsung’s December update patches 80 vulnerabilities in Galaxy devices

The December SMR for Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones and tablets patches no less than 80 vulnerabilities. These include some Galaxy-specific vulnerabilities as well as flaws in Android OS partner components. Some of these flaws were critical and could lead to remote code execution if exploited in the wild. The latest update for the Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy A12 patches all of these vulnerabilities on the two Samsung devices.
