Samsung researcher Juho Lee gets IEEE ComSoc Excellence award
Samsung Research fellow Juho Lee has received the prestigious IEEE ComSoc Excellence award. He made several technical contributions to the standardization of wireless communications from the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers). IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organization.
Samsung spends billions of dollars on research and development, and it is no wonder that the company has several researchers like Lee who contribute tremendously to the development and standardization of new technologies.

Juho Lee received the inaugural Excellence in Supporting Standardization for Communications Award in recognition of his excellent leadership skills and pivotal role in the development and standardization of global mobile communication technologies. Lee was the sole recipient of the honor, which shows how valuable his contributions have been. He received the award at a ceremony on December 5 at the 2023 IEEE Global Communications (GLOBECOM) conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The winners of the IEEE ComSoc Career Awards are selected through a rigorous process that spans over two months and involves 14 judges.
Lee has been contributing to the world of telecommunication technologies since 2000, when 3G was commercialized for smartphones. From February 2003 to August 2009, he served as vice-chair of the RAN WG1 (Radio Access Network Working Group 1) at the 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project), which is the global mobile communications standardization organization that standardizes mobile telecommunication technologies. He contributed to the standardization of 4G LTE. In 2018, Lee was elected as an IEEE Fellow, a significance that is reserved only for the top IEEE members who have accomplished extraordinary achievements.
Juho Lee said, “It is an honor to be named the first winner of the IEEE ComSoc Excellence in Supporting Standardization for Communications Award. Going forward, I will continue to research, develop, and standardize advanced mobile communications technologies such as 5G and 6G technology.”
Ki-Tae Lee, a former Vice Chairman at Samsung, received the IEEE ComSoc Distinguished Industry Leader Award in 2004. He played an instrumental role in the development of Samsung’s legendary Anycall mobile phone series. Jong-Kyun Shin, who was also a Vice Chairman at Samsung, received the same award in 2016. Shin developed the world’s first mobile phone with a color screen.
