According to a new report from TheElec, Samsung Electronics purchased 107 audio-related patents from Knowles Electronics in mid-December 2023. It is a popular name in the world of personal audio, and it makes some top-rated audio drivers used in in-ear monitors (IEMs). This information was confirmed by data from the US PTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office). Knowles has two patents registered in South Korea, but Samsung did not purchase those.
The audio patents that Samsung purchased from Knowles for Harmn include audio processing, noise cancellation, and noise suppression technologies. These audio technologies can improve the audio performance of several audio products, especially wireless earbuds. Samsung has already used Knowles’ audio technologies in its Family Hub refrigerators.

Last year, Samsung-owned Harman International acquired Roon, an audiophile-grade music streaming and management service. It streams music from an offline server or Hi-Res music streaming services like Qobuz and Tidal. It also has a great music recommendation engine. Roon works with almost all Hi-Fi music equipment makers and excellent apps for all operating systems and platforms.
Thanks to Harman (which owns AKG, Harman, JBL, and Infinity Audio) and Roon, Samsung has what it takes to build a tremendous audio platform. It remains to be seen how well Samsung uses these technologies to improve its Galaxy Buds lineup and general audio performance in its smartphones, laptops, tablets, TVs, and soundbars.
