Samsung’s forgotten Galaxy A90 5G gets December update

0 23

Samsung is rolling out a new software update to the Galaxy A90 5G, a 2019 premium mid-range phone that never got a sequel. No, the handset isn’t getting Android 13. It never will. But the company is seeding the latest security patch to the device. The Galaxy A90 5G is picking up the December SMR (Security Maintenance Release).

As of this writing, the December security update for the Galaxy A90 5G is available to users in Australia and New Zealand. The new firmware version for the phone is A908BXXS5EVK4 (via). It isn’t gaining anything apart from this month’s vulnerability fixes, and there are plenty of those. Samsung recently detailed the content of the December SMR and we can see it patches nearly 80 vulnerabilities.

These include five critical Android system and component flaws, some of which could lead to remote code execution without any additional execution privileges. The latest SMR also patches 60 high-severity Android system and component issues, some of which allowed local information disclosure. On top of this, Samsung patched 13 Galaxy-specific vulnerabilities as well.

The Galaxy A90 5G will not get the Android 13 update

Samsung launched the Galaxy A90 5G in September 2019 as the top-of-the-line model of its revamped Galaxy A series. The company never followed up with a succeeding model but continued to offer excellent software support for the phone. The device debuted running Android 9 Pie and received three major Android OS updates, i. e. Android 10, Android 11, and Android 12. And that’s all it will get. It is not eligible for Android 13.

Now that the Galaxy A90 5G is on its last legs, it is also getting security updates less frequently. Samsung is only pushing the updates to the phone biannually, i. e. two releases in a year. These will come at least until September 2023. So maybe two more updates at best. Unfortunately, this system doesn’t guarantee a global release of the same SMR. So we can’t confirm if the Galaxy A90 5G will get the December security patch in other markets.

Nonetheless, if you’re using this phone, you should upgrade to a newer model soon. The Galaxy A90 5G will get increasingly vulnerable to privacy and security threats. But as long as you have it, you can check for updates from the Settings app. Go to the Software update menu and tap on Download and install. You may also get a notification once a new software update is available for your phone. You can tap the notification to install the latest update.
