Samsung’s new rugged tablet, Galaxy Tab Active 5, hits the shelves this month

After a few leaks and online encounters last year, the rugged Galaxy Tab Active 5 became official earlier today. The Tab Active 5 is the latest rugged tablet from Samsung, and it boasts enterprise-ready features, security, and optimizations. It also sports a user-removable battery and a No Battery Mode to fit a variety of work environments.

Samsung’s new rugged tablet has Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection, an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, and a MIL-STD-810H-grade construction. When wrapped in the bundled protective case, Samsung says the Galaxy Tab Active 5 can withstand a 1.8m drop.

Other enterprise features include a customizable Active Key that can be mapped to a variety of functions, an S Pen with an IP68 rating in the box, Samsung Knox with Knox Vault, a fingerprint sensor, and the aforementioned No Battery Mode, which lets the tablet function when plugged in without the user-removable battery installed.

Galaxy Tab Active 5 specifications

The new Galaxy Tab Active 5 tablet has Wi-Fi 6 and 5G connectivity. It features an 8-inch TFT WUXGA display with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, and it’s equipped with a 13MP primary camera (f/1.9 aperture) and a 5MP (f/2.2) front-facing sensor.

Samsung hasn’t specified which chip powers the tablet, but it’s likely the Exynos 1380 5nm octa-core solution. The CPU is paired with 6GB or 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of storage, which is expandable by up to 1TB via microSD. The removable battery has a capacity of 5,050mAh.

The Galaxy Tab Active 5 measures 126.8 x 213.8 x 10.1mm, weighs 433 grams, and will be released this January running Android 14 and One UI 6 out of the box.
