Sasha Calle Hopes To Return As Supergirl Following ‘The Flash’ Debut

Regardless of whether The Flash earns a sequel within James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC universe, one of its biggest stars is hoping to return to the canon sooner rather than later. Sasha Calle will debut her version of Supergirl in the Andy Muschetti-directed film, and she thinks a project already announced by Gunn as part of the reborn DCU would fit her take smashingly.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Calle spoke enthusiastically about the role, saying:
“I love her deeply! And I think that [The Flash] is really a runway to a bigger story for her. … Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, by Tom King, is an incredible comic. I love it. I think it’s so cool. So yeah, I would hope to continue. I hope to continue playing Supergirl for sure.”
Calle specifically mentions Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow because a film adaptation is already in the works. Gunn announced it earlier this year as part of the DCU’s inaugural phase called “Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters.” The movie is expected to release about two years after Gunn’s own Superman: Legacy, which will hit theaters in 2025.
The original Woman of Tomorrow story by Tom King examines a wounded and angry Kara Zor-El — cousin to Supes — who watches Krypton’s destruction firsthand and later travels to Earth to help Kal-El, only to discover he doesn’t need much help. There, she reckons with feeling useless and being constantly compared to her famous cousin. Gunn said of Kara’s character in his “Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters” slate reveal video:
“Superman is a guy who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents, whereas Supergirl in this story, she is a character who was raised on a chunk of Krypton, she watched everyone around her perish in some terrible way, so she’s a much more jaded character.”
While the world has yet to experience Calle’s take on the iconic character, she’s likely already impressing Gunn and Safran by nature of being a comic book fan herself. She told EW, “I advise people to pick up comic books. I advise people to go into a comic book store and have fun, and to sit there and just open everything up because it is the most fun experience.” Calle added, “When I see a comic book store, I just immediately walk in, and I’m like, ‘Where’s Supergirl?’ And I just read it all.”
