Skoda Kushaq and VW Taigun get 5-star ratings under new G-NCAP rules

Global N-CAP has announced that the all-new Skoda Kushaq and the Volkswagen Taigun have scored a 5-star safety rating. Both vehicles have received the rating under the new crash test protocols of Global NCAP.

The updated crash test protocols of Global NCAP assess the front and side impact protection for all testing models. Also, vehicles with Electronic Stability Control (ESC), pedestrian protection and side impact pole protection assessments are required to get full five-star ratings.

Both the cars scored 29.64 points out of 34 for adult safety protection and 42 points out of 49 for child safety. Both the cars come with front airbags and ESC as standard, which helped the cars get the highest ratings.

According to Global NCAP, both vehicles offered to the driver’s and passenger’s head and neck were good. The driver’s chest showed adequate protection and the passenger’s chest showed good protection. The driver’s and passenger’s knees showed good protection. Driver’s tibias showed marginal and adequate protection and passenger’s tibias showed good protection.

The footwell area was rated as stable. The bodyshell was rated as stable and it is capable of withstanding further loadings. Side impact: head, abdomen and pelvis protection was good while chest protection was marginal. Side pole impact: curtain airbags meet the fitment requirements and a pole impact test was performed in a version with side head protection airbags showing good protection to the head and pelvis, adequate protection to the abdomen and marginal protection to the chest.

For the frontal crash, the model with two airbags was used while for the side pole crash, a top-end variant with six airbags was used.

First vehicles on MQB A0 IN platform

Both Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun are the first vehicles to be made on the MQB A0 IN platform. It is made for the India platform and is derived from the MQB A0 platform that underpins a large number of cars in the international markets. While the platform is derived to make sure that they are cost-effective for developing markets like India, the latest crash tests by Global NCAP ensure that the new platform is as safe as the European counterparts.

Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun are essential same vehicles and are made in the same factory on the same assembly line. The MQB A0 IN platform also underpins the Skoda Slavia and the Volkswagen Virtus sedans in the Indian market.
