A few weeks ago, Skoda announced that they will be fitting the Slavia with a new 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. This system replaces the larger Skoda’s 10-inch unit. The 8-inch unit is made by Panasonic. Volkswagen will also be doing a similar downgrade on their recently launched Virtus. The reason behind this is probably the semiconductor issue that the world is going through. Here, are some pictures of the new touchscreen infotainment system.

The 8-inch screen does look nice. It has shortcut buttons and two rotary dials. It also supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay which works with a wire. The screen might be decent but it is still a downgrade as compared to Skoda’s 10-inch unit which came with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, in-built navigation and valet mode.

Removal of the larger screen does not look good considering that the manufacturer recently increased the prices of the Slavia by Rs. 60,000. So, now the Slavia starts at Rs. 10.99 lakhs ex-showroom and goes up to Rs. 18.39 lakhs ex-showroom. Moreover, it is being said that Volkswagen and Skoda might also remove the wireless charger from their sedans.

Volkswagen recently launched the Virtus in the Indian market. It shares its components, platform, engine and gearbox with the Skoda Slavia, Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun. The only difference in the powertrain is that the Virtus’s 1.5 TSI engine is not offered with a manual gearbox. The prices of the Virtus starts at Rs. 11.22 lakhs ex-showroom and goes up to Rs. 17.92 lakhs ex-showroom.

Customers reporting AC issue in Slavia and Kushaq

Several customers have reported that the air conditioner’s compressor keeps tripping and does not work when the vehicle is parked or when you are stuck in traffic. The issue is primarily seen on the 1.0-litre TSI engine. Some owners of the Volkswagen Taigun have also reported a similar issue. Skoda has said that they are looking into the issue. The AC issue is not being reported on the 1.5-litre TSI engine.

Slavia engine and gearbox

As mentioned above Slavia is offered in two petrol engine options. Both are turbocharged TSI units. The 1.0-litre, three cylinder engine produces 115 PS of max power and 178 Nm of peak torque. It is offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. Then there is the 1.5-litre, four-cylinder TSI engine that produces 150 PS of max power and 250 Nm of peak torque. It comes mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Slavia variants and rivals

Skoda offers the Slavia in five variants. They are Active, Ambition, Style Non-sunroof and Style. The 1.5-litre TSI is only offered with the Style variant and the 1.0-litre TSI is offered on all variants. The Slavia has to compete against Volkswagen Virtus, Honda City, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz and Hyundai Verna.
