SNL Skewers Congress’ Antisemitism Hearing and Rep. Elise Stefanik

0 34

This week’s Saturday Night Live cold open gave us a C-SPAN report on the GOP-led Congress’ bizarre hearing this week consisting of testimony from a trio of university presidents on the subject of antisemitism on U.S. college campuses. There was: MIT president Sally Kornbluth (Chloe Fineman), University of Pennsylvania president Elizabeth Magill (Heidi Gardner), and Harvard president Dr. Claudine Gay (Ego Nwodim).

MAGA minion Rep. Elise Stefanik (played by Chloe Troast) kicked off the proceedings, saying, “Now, I’m going to start screaming questions at these women like I’m Billy Eichner. ANTISEMITISM, YAY OR NAY?” She then followed up with: “DO YOU THINK GENOCIDE IS BAD?!”

When the university presidents asked for more context, Rep. Stefanik was giddy with delight. “Am I winning this hearing? Somebody pinch me!” she exclaimed.

And Rep. Stefanik, who’s amplified 2020 election conspiracies, refused to condemn Trump’s family-separation policy, is opposed to the DREAM Act, voted against the Equality Act, and was one of Rep. George Santos’ biggest supporters, somehow got very sanctimonious during this hearing, exclaiming, “I am here today because hate speech has no place on college campuses. Hate speech belongs in Congress, on Elon Musk’s Twitter, in private dinners with my donors, and in public speeches by my work-husband, Donald Trump.”

Rep. Stefanik claimed that “this issue is personal for me” because while she is not Jewish, some of her best friends are also not Jewish. Then, we heard from Rep. Takano (Bowen Yang), a Democrat who served as a counterpoint to Rep. Stefanik.

But the university presidents couldn’t even answer basic questions about how they felt concerning a student saying they poisoned the water supply, or saying they had a knife, or yelling “fire in a crowded theater.”

“I’d be excited the theater was crowded because I support the arts,” offered University of Pennsylvania president Magill. (In real life, Magill was let go following the hearing.)

Thankfully, the president of the University of Phoenix (online), played by Kenan Thompson, was “willing to say yes to anything,” much to Rep. Stefanik’s delight.

“And will you promise to eliminate all antisemitism from your campus?” Rep. Stefanik asked.

“Well… my campus is the internet, so antisemitism is kind of our most popular major. And our mascot is porn,” replied the university president.
