On the 30th anniversary of the first Spice Girls auditions, the group shared footage of their earliest moments together

Friendship never ends for the Spice Girls as they revisit the rounds of auditions that led to them being placed in what would become the biggest girl group of all time. Timed to the celebration of their 30th anniversary, the group shared old archival footage from the audition process alongside a message to their fans.

“Today marks the 30th anniversary of the very first Spice Girls auditions,” they wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “What started back in 1994 has turned into an amazing journey, way beyond anything we could have ever imagined. Thank you to our fans for your support from day one #FriendshipNeverEnds.”

In March 1994, Victoria Beckham, Geri Halliwell, Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm, and Emma Bunton entered into rounds and rounds of auditions among hundreds of others until the group dwindled down to the chosen few who would come to officially form the Spice Girls.

Their debut single “Wannabe” arrived in 1996 and the years that followed was the release of three hit albums and their 1997 film Spice World. Their 2019 reunion tour — sans Beckham — brought their Girl Power across the U.K. for the first time in more than a decade.

Back in 1997, when they would often recall the story of their formation in interviews and in their self-made Spice magazine, the group couldn’t quite get their dates right. Their version of events took place in 1993, not 1994. When Rolling Stone pointed this out to them in an interview that year, Beckham joked: “Was it a leap year or something?”
