Spotify to offer HiFi streaming through a pricier new tier

0 40

Spotify may charge extra for lossless HiFi (high fidelity) audio. The music streaming giant is reportedly planning a pricier new subscription tier that will include HiFi streaming. The company is targeting to launch the new tier later this year, starting with select international markets. It could arrive in the US in October.

Spotify first announced plans to add HiFi music in February 2021. While some services already offered lossless streaming back then, a few of its competitors lacked it. So the company wasn’t lagging much. But halfway through 2023, the platform is still missing HiFi streaming. In March this year, Spotify’s Co-President Gustav Söderström said that the feature is still in the pipeline but it’s taking time to launch it because of the changing demands of the industry.

His comments suggested that Spotify always wanted to charge extra for lossless audio but Apple Music and Amazon Music offering it at no additional cost has affected the plans (the latter two services have hiked their prices by a dollar in the past year, though). A new Bloomberg report now confirms that the world’s largest music streaming service will indeed require users to pay more for HiFi streaming.

Spotify is finally about to add HiFi streaming

According to the new report, Spotify is internally referring to its upcoming priciest subscription tier as “Supremium”. It’s unclear whether it will only bring HiFi streaming or there will be more exclusive perks. But the company reportedly plans to “augment” its existing Premium tier with expanded access to audiobooks. This could be “either through a specific number of hours free per month or a specific number of titles,” with an option to purchase more.

This suggests that Spotify’s HiFi tier (no official name yet) will come with full access to audiobooks. It may also bundle podcasts and features like spatial audio and Dolby Atmos. As for pricing, there’s no telling what the company plans to charge. In October last year, a Reddit user revealed that Spotify is running a survey about a “Platinum” tier costing $19.99 per month. Along with HiFi music, it included Studio Sound, Headphone Tuner, limited-ad podcasts, and more.

It remains to be seen whether Spotify will proceed with this plan of charging subscribers $19.99 per month for HiFi streaming. As said earlier, the company is looking to debut the new tier in some non-US markets over the next few months. So we may hear more about it soon. “At Spotify, we are constantly iterating and ideating to improve our product offering and offer value to users,” a company spokesperson told Bloomberg. “But we don’t comment on speculation around possible new features and do not have anything new to share at this time.”
