Stability AI announced StableStudio, the open-source release of its premiere application DreamStudio

On May 17, Stability AI released StableStudio, an open-source version of DreamStudio, a text-to-image consumer application. StableStudio marks a fresh chapter for its imaging pipeline and showcases Stability AI’s dedication to advancing open-source development within the AI ecosystem.

“We will be doing bounties, hackathons & more along with cutting edge UI/UX research so we can all work together to enable open models to unleash our collective creativity,” CEO Emad Mostaque tweeted about the release, which is the latest in a series of moves by Stability AI that highlight its efforts to lead the way in what has become an open-source AI boom over the past few months.

Since the original release of Stable Diffusion, DreamStudio has served as Stability AI’s primary interface for its new models and features. Most recently, it was upgraded to use SDXL, its latest image generation model. The application was first conceived as a platform to bring generative AI capabilities to the masses. Since then, millions of images have been created by its users.

Stability AI stressed community building in its press release, noting how “from enabling local-first development to experimenting with a new plugin system, we’ve tried hard to make things extensible for external developers.”

DreamStudio was first imagined as an animation studio for Disco Diffusion. Focus shifted toward image generation with the imminent arrival of Stable Diffusion in the summer of 2022. Its goal of creating a great multi-modal experience for generative AI has endured. To that end, the company will be working on releasing its upcoming chat interface within the StableStudio project.

The company says the DreamStudio website is a “service designed to enable anyone to access this powerful creative tool without the need for software installation, coding knowledge, or a heavy-duty local GPU.”
