Sudha Murty nominated to Rajya Sabha by President Droupadi Murmu
Author and former chairperson of Infosys Foundation Sudha Murty (73) has been nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the President of India Droupadi Murmu. The development was confirmed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on microblogging website X (formerly Twitter).

Wishing her a fruitful Parliamentary tenure,” Modi wrote in the post.

An author of popular children’s books, Murty is the wife of India’s veteran businessman and Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy and famously provided the first seed capital of Rs 10,000 for the setting up of Infosys. They have two children – Akshata and Rohan. Akshata Murty is married to current UK prime minister Rishi Sunak.
Most recently in 2023, Sudha Murty was awarded the Padma Bhushan. In 2006, Sudha Murty was awarded the Padma Shri – the fourth-highest civilian award in India.
An alumna of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Murty was the first female engineer working at the shop floor employed with the Tata Engineering & Locomotive Company. She served as chairperson of the Infosys Foundation before retiring in 2021. Under her leadership, the Infosys Foundation launched multiple initiatives to educate and empower people from the marginalised sections of society. She is an author of over 150 published books including critically acclaimed books such as Three Thousand Stitches, Wise & Otherwise, Mahashweta, How I taught my grandmother to read, Dollar Bahu and many others.
A member of the public healthcare initiatives of the Gates Foundation, Murty has also established the Murty Classical Library of India at Harvard University.
