Superman Fans Have Passionate Thoughts About James Gunn Casting a Henry Cavill Lookalike in ‘Superman: Legacy’

James Gunn‘s Superman: Legacy finally has its Clark Kent and Lois Lane, and the talented actor and actress set to breathe new life into the characters are bringing with them a lot of excitement, joy, and even some slightly raised eyebrows in the process.

David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan will play Kent and Lane, respectively, in Superman: Legacy, and the passion project from Gunn is set to be a brilliant new journey, with a Kent who isn’t taking to the skies for the first time. That’s right, Gunn says his version of Superman’s journey isn’t an origin story — it’s something else entirely. Aside from that, he’s keeping his cards close to the chest, but fans are taking to social media with a slew of big emotions as they react to the news, especially with Corenswet’s look so closely resembling Henry Cavill‘s.

Calling it like it is, Corenswet does resemble Cavill — he said so himself in an interview with Entertainment Weekly:

“It came to my attention before the internet got a hold of me, but my pie-in-the-sky ambition is definitely to play Superman. I would love to see somebody do an upbeat, throwback [take on Superman]. I love the Henry Cavill dark and gritty take, but I would love to see the next one be very bright and optimistic.”

Part of the drawback concerning Corenswet’s casting is that he resembles Cavill, and presumably Gunn didn’t want Cavill to continue his run as Superman, so why cast a guy who looks just like him? While we’re always on Team Cavill, we’re also on Team Corenswet — and the latter is exceptionally talented. A Julliard-trained actor, he’s landed several roles since his graduation in 2016, and shows no signs of slowing down.

It’s no surprise that fans of the hero have also noticed the resemblance, something they’ve been paying attention to in the months that Corenswet’s name has been swirling around in the rumor mill.

Some fans wonder what Cavill will think about Corenswet’s taking the role, and this video is drawing some laughs from Superman fans.

In all honesty, we’re sure that Cavill will be as supportive as they come.

This tweet solves whatever mystery might be looming about the resemblance between Cavill and Corenswet; believe it or not — there’s an uncanny thing taking place, and it has been for some time.

Comicbook.com’s Brandon Davis says it all with a tweet that echoes what most of us are thinking; we could have kept watching Cavill breathe life into Superman for years to come, but there’s a wow factor in Corenswet, too.

In fact, a slew of other tweets share this same sentiment.

Many fans say that Cavill was the best Superman ever (with many others agreeing, next to Christopher Reeve, of course), and we think they’ve certainly got a point, but Corenswet is about to usher in something new and exciting, and that’s thrilling in its own right.

As we said before, Corenswet saw a lot of good in Cavill’s portrayal of Superman, and as many fans speak of him being the best, their shouts of praise aren’t falling on deaf ears. Corenswet saw what Cavill did with the role, and he wants to put his own spin on the beloved superhero. Serving as a different version of the hero, he’s not attempting to undo what Cavill did; he’s stepping into a different version of the story.
