First 3D-printed functional human brain tissue grows like the real thing

Researchers have used a novel technique to 3D print brain tissue whose cells developed into functional neurons that communicated with each other in a matter of weeks. They say the approach could be used to study healthy and unhealthy brains, test drugs, or simply observe how the brain develops.Creating an organ as close as possible to the real thing is essential for research exploring disease pathology and testing new drugs. The brain presents particular challenges, including the fact that neurons grown in the lab have to…

Formlabs’ new resin makes more realistic 3D-printed teeth

Formlabs has rolled up to CES 2024 in Las Vegas with its customary bundle of announcements for its class-leading 3D printers. The company unveiled several new tools and materials at this year's show, but the most interesting has to be its Premium Teeth Resin, yet another foray into the dentistry world. It’s intended to be used to create 3D-printed dentures as well as for temporary restorations that sit on implants like All-On-X. The company says it’s already been registered with the FDA as a Class II biocompatible…

3D-printed face implants: IIT Madras, Zoriox Innovation Labs develop 3D-printed face implants for black fungus patients

Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) on Tuesday said that its researchers have developed 3D-printed face implants for patients suffering from black fungus, which has been reported in Covid-19 patients as well as those with uncontrolled diabetes, HIV/AIDS and other medical conditions. The institute said that around 50 implants have already been done on patients from economically weaker sections.IIT-M has partnered with Zoriox Innovation labs, a startup founded by dental surgeons in Chennai, to implement this…

NASA’s 3D-Printed Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine Soars

By Ramon J. Osorio, NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center December 26, 2023Engineers at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, conduct a successful, 251-second hot fire test of a full-scale Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine combustor in fall 2023, achieving more than 5,800 pounds of thrust. Credit: NASANASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center has successfully tested a 3D-printed Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine (RDRE) for over four minutes, producing significant thrust. This test, essential for deep-space…

Graphene oxide used to strengthen and electrify 3D-printed concrete

3D-printed concrete structures are claimed to be faster and cheaper to build than their traditional counterparts, but they're not always as strong. That problem may soon be solved by adding a pinch of graphene oxide, which could also be used to detect cracks.Ordinarily, concrete buildings, bridges and other structures are made by pouring wet concrete into wooden molds (aka forms) which are removed once the concrete has hardened.By contrast, the 3D printing of such structures involves depositing successive layers of…

3D-printed titanium Superleggero may be the world’s priciest bottle cage

Most cyclists probably don't give much thought to what sort of water bottle cage they use. If you're one of those people who just has to have the best of everything, though, you might want to check out Alptitude's 3D-printed titanium Superleggero TI.Italian manufacturer Alptitude Bike Components has created a number of high-end bicycle parts in recent years. The company even previously released a carbon fiber version of the Superleggero cage. This latest TI version, however, is 3D-printed out of titanium … complete with…

Lasers allow fine-tuning of 3D-printed metals without “heating & beating”

A team of researchers led by the University of Cambridge has developed a new technique that uses high-energy lasers to fine tune the properties of 3D-printed metal without compromising the complex shapes it forms.Additive or 3D printing is proving an increasingly powerful tool for engineering and manufacturing, but it's far from a panacea. In fact, it often has some major drawbacks that require new approaches to overcome.3D printing metal usually involves a machine that lays down thin layers of metal alloy in the form of…

3D-printed ceramics may increase gas turbine fuel efficiency, researchers report

Stephen Lynch, associate professor of mechanical engineering, holds metal 3D-printed turbine vanes that are tested in the high speed cascade shown in the background. Lynch was part of a team that 3D printed a turbine component with ceramics, which are more heat tolerant than traditional metals. Credit: Kate Myers/Penn State Airplane engines can reach temperatures of more than 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The hotter they get,…

3D-printed rocket engine revs up for orbital launch in Scotland

Edinburgh-based aerospace startup Skyrora announced yesterday it had commenced a series of full-duration tests of its updated 3D-printed 70kN engine.  The new design features an improved engine cooling chamber and can be built approximately 66% faster at a 20% cost reduction. It is meant to take the company closer to commercial orbital launch later this year from the SaxaVord Spaceport that is being developed on Lamba Ness in Unst, Shetland.  Skyrora says the tests will evaluate various…
