The AI Act is done. Here’s what will (and won’t) change

The companies with the most powerful AI models, such as GPT-4 and Gemini, will face more onerous requirements, such as having to perform model evaluations and risk-assessments and mitigations, ensure cybersecurity protection, and report any incidents where the AI system failed. Companies that fail to comply will face huge fines or their products could be banned from the EU.  It’s also worth noting that free open-source AI models that share every detail of how the model was built, including the model’s architecture,…

Yard Act review – a band having fun in the midst of an identity crisis | Yard Act

‘Who prefers our earlier work?” Yard Act frontman James Smith asks the audience, and it’s a question you get the sense he has been asking himself of late too. A crowd member is brought up on stage to spin a wheel, offering a one-time-only chance to hear a randomly selected song from the band’s 2021 debut EP Dark Days. It lands on the title track and the band dutifully bash out the kind of jagged post-punk that led to their rapid ascent during lockdown.Three years on, with the band seemingly feeling restricted by their own…

Yard Act review – a punk-funk workout for overthinkers | Yard Act

“Norwich! We wanna consume you! Do you wanna consume us?” drawls singer James Smith with a grin on the first night of Yard Act’s latest UK tour. It’s a very Yard Act thing to do, drawing the audience’s attention to the transactional nature of gig-going; of band as product, of paying your money to jump around on a Wednesday night. Smith may also be hinting at the carnivorous aspects of fandom, the parasocial nature of the exchange that has always existed but feels even more acute in the internet age, where bands can…

Bumble has lost a third of its Texas workforce in the months since the state passed the controversial abortion SB 8 (Senate Bill 8), also known as the Texas Heartbeat Act, over a year ago. This new data point was shared by Bumble’s Interim General Counsel, Elizabeth Monteleone, speaking on a panel this afternoon at the SXSW conference in Austin, Texas. ‘An act of betrayal’: Gabriel García Márquez’s son on publishing his father’s work against his will | Books

A novel written by the Colombian Nobel laureate Gabriel García Márquez in the last years of his life has been published – against his instruction that it be destroyed. Until August, written when the author had dementia, comes a decade after his death, on what would have been his 97th birthday. It has been described by his sons as “the fruits of one last effort to carry on creating against all odds”, and tells the story of a woman who makes a yearly pilgrimage to her mother’s grave on a Caribbean island, a trip that…
