When animation is an accessibility problem

Imagine entering a house with an endless series of doors and corridors. Behind some of those doors are the most delightful things imaginable: feasts straight out of Redwall, unicorns, an endless supply of scenic vistas, and unionized workplaces. Behind other doors, however, are grotesque and terrifying jack-in-the-boxes that pop up the minute you crack the door open, blasting up to fill the entire frame, dangling lasciviously on rusty springs as a creaky, vaguely circus-themed song plays. That’s what navigating the…

Minions: The Rise of Gru review – another serving of funny goofball nonsense | Animation in film

And here, in Minions: The Rise of Gru, the bean-shaped evil-groupies deliver a concentrated hit of irrepressible goofball nonsense. The film, which loosely follows the 2010 first Minions movie as an…

DC Fans Miserably Pick Apart a Depressing Missed Opportunity in Animation

2021’s Injustice should have been a smash-hit. The DC animated movie was adapted from Mortal Kombat developer NetherRealm Studios’ hit fighting games, set in a dystopian universe in which a tyrannical Superman transforms Earth into a police state and Batman leads a resistance against him. In the game this leads to all manner of strange alliances between heroes and villains and – given that this is a fighting game – a lot of kickass battles. The animated movie loosely adapts it, taking inspiration from both the…

The Sea Beast review – dazzling maritime adventure | Animation in film

Big Hero 6 director Chris Williams jumps ship – literally – from Disney to Netflix for this immensely enjoyable animated maritime adventure. Aiming its harpoon at everything from Moby-Dick to Master and Commander, the film unfolds in a distant past in which generations of brave hunters have battled with a variety of fearsome monsters of the deep. But what, the film asks, if the real enemy is not the giant fish that is just going about its business, but a power that is rather closer to home? A few slightly pantomime-voice…
