The Problematic Arrival of Anti-Obesity Drugs

To go through life in a fat body means you are less likely to be hired for a job and will be paid less than non-fat people. The effects of weight discrimination—which can include poorer medical treatment, loneliness, psychological distress, and increased stress—may actually be cutting short the lives of fat people.Deciding whether to take the drugs becomes  a “devil’s choice,” says Osborn. “Assert that I have the right to be as I am right now—or exchange that right for significantly more rights and privileges in the…

Experimental anti-obesity drug reduces gut inflammation in mice

An experimental anti-obesity drug developed several years ago by researchers at the Salk Institute has been found to prevent intestinal inflammation in mice. The drug has yet to be tested in humans but the findings point to a novel way to prevent flare-ups in patients suffering from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).Farnesoid X receptor (FXR) is a protein expressed in the liver and intestine. When we start eating a meal, and bile acids begin to build up, FXR triggers a variety of metabolic processes to aid digestion and…

Purified Sand Particles Have Anti-Obesity Effects, Scientists Confirm : ScienceAlert

Porous particles of silica made from purified sand could one day play a role in attempts to lose weight.Past clinical trials have already produced promising results, but the actual weight-lowering mechanism behind the potential treatment has been poorly understood. To sift out the key variables, researchers have now tested a range of silica sizes and shapes in a simulation of the human gut after a heavy meal. The results support the idea that porous silica can "impede the digestive processes" that are usually triggered by…

Body weight slashed by 20% in new anti-obesity drug trial
